upright dizzy caps

Does anyone use an upright distributor cap (as opposed to side-entry)
fitted with right-angle connectors? If this set-up is viable, does it
work only with Webers or only with Strombergs? Are some upright caps
taller than others - and does this help? Or is the clearance between
carb-bottom and cap-top just too tight for upright caps?

Richard,
I have used the upright dist cap for years. It is much more resistant to moisture and high voltage leakage than the side cap. It easily fits under the webers with right angle boots on the wires. I use good quality 7mm silicone resistance core wires too. The old solid wire Lucas 'bumblebee' yellow/black striped wire turned brittle after just a few thousand miles.
I also use the Stanpart Blue Streak (U.S. made) points. They use a dense phenolic fiber rubbing block and 16 oz. spring to reduce point bounce and timing scatter. A balanced Twink will spin to 7000 without a miss.

Do you have a part number for those points? I used them 20 years
ago, and still have fond memories of them. I'm going to have
actually look under my Webers as I don't think I have 1/2 an inch
(about 13mm) to spare for an upright cap.

Dan,
Are the right angle boots and terminals Lucas? If other than Lucas, do you know the manufacturer?
Thanks

The point set I use are made by Standard Motor Products of Long Island N.Y. They are called "Blue Streak LubriPoints" The part number is LU-1617XP. They have a heavier spring and a felt lube strip where you apply grease for the cam lobe. They make the matching condenser. These points are far superior to the original Lucas points. The rubbing block does not wear much, so the point gap remains constant.
The upright dist cap is a fairly compact piece with a spherical profile. It is a tight fit, but the wires just clear the bottom of the weber. FYI, about 90% of all little british cars use the same point set and condenser. Many years ago, I took the points out of my Elan to replace the burned points in my friend's GT1 Jag XKE at the track.
I bought all the pieces from Rich at Kampena Motors in Sonoma.
I don't have the part number for the distributor cap. The plug wires are Accel 7mm silicone resistor performance wires with right angle boots for both the plugs and the distributor. I use the boots and terminals that came with the kit.

Dan Wise

I'm in East Meadow, NY (Long Island). We won the award last year
(2005) on Sunday (the European cars are displayed on Sunday,
American on Saturday), behind the reviewing, stand near the water.
You may see us there again this year - we've applied to enter my
wife's Fiat X1/9. (We have to wait three years to enter the Lotus
again!). We are waiting to hear if we are accepted.
