S4 exhaust

My exhaust box keeps grounding ,I have raised it as high as I can ,it is so badly damaged that I need to replace it .
What does the list think about fitting a in line "bomb" type nearer to the "Y" piece and doing away with the rear box .
Would it be excessively noisy?What about performance?

If what you're suggesting is that the "bomb" is the only "muffler" in the
system, I can only say - Too loud!!! Been there, done that.

Hmmm, On my S3 I have only a 14" "bomb" type muffler and it does not
sound at all loud to me. I have never had it bottom out either. As
such I have been looking for the equal in stainless steel.

John,

I have what you must be calling a "bomb" type muffler on my S3 Elan, but itis fitted in the normal muffler area at the end. This is a Walker brand (at least it used to be available from NAPA) and I have the number recorded. It has angled inlet and outlet so that the muffler sits at an angle of maybe 20degrees, rising at the rear so that the very short tailpipe comes out in the normal location. Compared to the Stebro thing that was on it when I bought it 30 years ago, this system is quiet, but really is quieter that some of the aftermarket devices the Honda boy racers are using. Good sporty sound I think. If you are still interested, I can take you a photo of the installation and dig out the NAPA #.
