On a UK +2 which way should the wipers rotate?.....
If you are sat in the drivers seat should they rise from your gearstick
side...(the left if it's a UK car and the right if it's a European of US
version).....does that make sense?
In a RHD car the wipers are 'parked' to the left and wipe in a clockwise
sweep and the LHD cars wpiers are parked to the right and wipe in an
anticlowise direction....
Only ask as I am possibly looking at one near me similar to
mine....howeverlooking at the perliminary pics it was one of the thing
that stood out immediately.
Cheers

I was wondering about this as well!

On my car, which you know, is of very dubious vintage, the wipers park on
the right, as viewed from the drivers seat, and rotate anti-clockwise. The
two on e-bay at the moment look to be the same (I fancy the green one!)

The red one is a +2s but H reg. Mine however, is J reg, but has earlier
features!

One more point I noticed on the red car on ebay is that it only has one
washer jet. Mine has two!

What do other owners have?

My wipers park on the left and rise clockwise as per standard UK spec
otherwise if your wiper rises from the right anticlockwise your view is
hampered by the section of the screen not cleared by the wpier...and I
have 2 washers.......

Federal conversions?????
I don't know to be honest but the way the ones on ebay rotate mean that
you do not get a clear screen and in theory if an MOT station noticed
they could I suppose fail you.....I'll ask my friend who does MOTs when
I go for mine on Saturday......I hope everyone understands what I'm
wittering on about.......

These are all UK cars and all show the steeringwheel on the right and
the wipers rising from the left clockwise...er that is until you get to
the next to last picture and there are 2 cars next to each other with
the wipers going clockwise and anticlockwise.......oh I dunno......
I would have thought that legislation would have made the wipers rise
towards the driver depending on which country it going to.......ah
well......what do I know......

As I said, this is something I have wondered about, but as there appears to
be a significant number of cars with the wipers parking on the right, they
cannot all be ex federal!

How about a straw poll? Of the +2 owners on this list, do the wipers park on
the left or right when you are sat in the drivers seat, and is the car LH or
RH drive?

David,

I've just checked my 1970 block, now spare, which is sitting in the garage.

The number is stamped into the casting on the narrow horizontal surface on top of the rh mounting lugs.

If you take a look at the contempory road tests, the photos of both
Elans and Plus Twos show no conformity at all with regards to which
side of the screen the wipers park, no matter if the car is UK,
European or Federal, it makes no difference!

Now,if we could speak to the man on the factory floor who fitted
screen wipers, he may have a very good reason for flip-flopping the
wiper park! In his absence,we can enjoy the speculation. My guess is
that cars built on a Friday had wipers parked on the left, so beware
the Friday car! However,it may be that if he had a bad day with the
wife he changed the side.

I do remember that in the 60's and 70's road tests often commented
on the wipers swept area, often favourably for British cars, not so
favourably for "foreign" cars. BMW seemed to send cars to the UK
with a good swept area for the person in the left hand seat.

David,
On my Feb 1970 originally J reg +2 which I have owned since 1972 the
wipers park on the right when seated in the car and it has 2 washer
jets. As the wipers are not offset to the driver side, as on most cars,
the only thing that determines left or right rest position is the
direction of the kink in the wiper arm and the setting of the park
switch.
And yes it does have the 6 minor gauges, the red door lamps, the white
door lamps, 2 under bonnet (hood) lamps, the built in fog lamps, boot
light and three ashtrays with illumination and a fold down rear seat
back(very useful)oh! I forgot the 2 interior lamps and the glove box
lamp and map light plus the instrument lights (8) and cigarette lighter.
The exhaust is in the center with a heat shield. The engine has a Webber
head and the bonnet has the Stromberg power bulge, the wheels are the
chrome rim knock on type, all original.
Because of all the lamps and the headlights etc. I replaced the prince
of darkness generator with an alternator many years ago as I got fed up
with pushing the car in the UK winter (moved to South Africa in 1976
with the +2) when driving to and from work in the dark with a battery
rapidly going flat when stuck in the traffic.
Originality/safety doesn?t go too far with me when broken down on the
side of the road hence the alternator and CV drive shafts. The 2 best
and easily reversible mods I have ever made. I have done the same mods
on my S3 Elan and I use that car every day and did 24000 virtually
trouble free miles in the car last year.
To keep the thread going the Elan also parks on the right and I must get
some of those adjustable socks for track days to prevent body lean, or
are they for pub days?

Regards
Steve Crook

If you look down between the carbies you will find it on the flat boss
that the engine mount bolts to.

Mmmm. Thanks.

Mine is, I think, I21020, but the I and 1 are not very clear. Has anyone any
idea what these numbers mean?

Thanks.

You say it is a 1970 block which would make it just later than mine? Do you
know if the numbers were sequential, and if so, can you remember what the
number was. It might help me with another piece of my car's history.

Cheers,
