CV Conversion - a question

PostPost by: Elan45 » Wed Jun 23, 2004 2:25 am

No Bill, from what I could see, the halfshaft was on the bench (remember these guys can afford the garages) and there was a ring at each end, outboardof the CV joint inner. The spline major diameter was larger than the middle part of the shaft & if anything, the shaft was to long and the CV was leaving the splined area and moving toward the center of the shaft. I was toldthey were made by Taylor specifically for this car.

rongs on the outboard end of the shaft (CV cannot move inboard, as the
splines "end" with a little lump).

Roger, I wonder if the cause for failoure on that formula car was either: i)
assembler negated to install the rings, or ii) shaft was too short for the
application, and pulled the shaft through the ring at full droop?

Cheers,
Bill

The rezeppa (sp?) style CVs use a snap ring on the outside ends (plural) to
keep the axle shaft in the joint. There must be enough free play so that at
either extreme droop or bump there is still some clearance between the side
of the joint and the snap rings. If it binds, there is a good chance that
the snap ring could be forced out or damaged. Generally the flange that the
CV fits into is cup shaped and closed ended to retain the grease, and also
preventing the shaft from exiting. Under those circumstances, even with no
snap rings, I see little danger of the shaft coming out of the CV. Am I
missing anything?

Should there be a snapring to stop the CV sliding out, the result of which
would be worse than a donut failing?
