Tacho

Hi List,
A while back when starting the car, my Tacho filled with smoke, and I
immediately switched the ignition off.
On inspection, the white wire from the back of the tacho via the ignition
switch and the coil had melted.
My question is: What is the component that the two White and one Green wire
connect to in the back of the Tacho?
Have I damaged it? The car still ran ok after the initial panic.
Any clues greatfully recieved.
Regards

Jeff,
I had the exact same thing happen. First, the two white wires are the
ignition. You can connect them to each other and the car will run, but the tach
will no longer be able to get a rev reading. The green wire is the12v power
supply to the tach. The white wire fried in my case because the ignition light
was not isolated from the body of the tach and shorted through the ignition
wires. Also, the thumb wheel clamps are very close to all sorts of wires. If one
of them touches a bare wire, you can count on a short. I just fried the
white wire inside the tach and was able to replace it. Good luck.

This is a joke Jeff, because all Lucas equipment work with smoke , as soon as you see the smoke escaping , then the equipment stops working !
I do not think Lucas ever attempted a tacho, else you won't see the dials through the smoke
