My 71 sprint has been fitted with these .I don't have enough Elan
miles under my belt to say if they are good, bad or indifferent.I have
an advertisement for these driveshafts that came with the car; If you
contact me off list I can fax you a copy if you like .Is there anyone
out there who knows what happened to this firm ? My car has one of
their upgraded engines fitted -- I have a full list of the specs. of
these engines also if anyone is interested .

David
i picked up a set for the "baby" elan some time ago and with a little fettling made them to fit my plus2,i was fed up paying out for "quality" donuts at every other MOT,before this i went the half way house, one donut and one u/j,this only halved the yearly expense, though it got rid of the wind-up,now i have the full system( four u/j's) and although the drive is a little harsher, i like it(with no chance of a drive shaft through the petrol tank!!),the only difference being that the splined shaft is free so you can replace either end easily
so i say go for it!

Hi All,

After viewing the prices for Plus 2 drive shaft conversions made in the states and the UK I have decided to develop my own down under. I now have a set made for my car using adapter plates supplied by K W Historic, Audi 80 driveshaft (good German steel in those!) and Audi Quattro CV joints at each end. I have yet to fit them to the car but I am sure glad to be getting rid of the donuts even though I have had no problems with them.

Having made these shafts I can advise it wasn't cheap and can now understand why they cost so much overseas. However its very obvious to me how a cheaper version can be made so that requires further development.

Next project is to fit the Isuzu transmission!

Ray

Can you tell us what you had to do to fit these parts. If I had the Audi 80
and Quatro parts sitting in my work bench, what we I do next? and next...

Hi,

You need to get particular Audi 80 driveshaft shaft, and you need four of them to get the right splines for the Quattro inner CV joint. You then haveto get them cut to length and re-welded. I am not actually sure what model it was but I can find out.

You need to get the adapter plates machined so you can fit the CV's to the drive output shafts and hub shafts, and then the four CV joints. Ken Woodburn on 00 64 9 274 3020 has just had a stack of these adapter plates made for a very reasonable price.

To be honest this project of mine has been a development of the good old Kombi conversion, however where I am going with this now is to find a cheaperway of making the shafts and adapters using a less expensive CV joint. This is likely to require a new type of adapter plate but thats easy to do.
I will keep the list posted on this.

Ray

I would be interested in what you discover.

Several emails have been posted in the past about such conversions applying
higher loads on the fragile diff case. Any comments anyone?

David
