In "LOTUS ELAN" by Duncan Wherrett there is a picture on page 71 of a
Series 1 26R which was campainged in the prototype GT 3000 class by
Rene Richard and Pierre Gele. Does anyone know of the cars current
whereabouts? Does anyone know of any more pictures of the car?

The LeMans records show the following result for the car. (durn
waterpumps).

for this yellow and blue Lotus Elan entered by the French importer.
This was the only Lotus Elan to race at Le Mans."

Must be the same car, although the details differ a little.

There was also an Elan which was entered in the Nurburgring 1000K and I believe it was also a DNF due to driveline failure (IIRC, differential failure). Somewhere I have a photo of the grid with the Elan in place. Maybe the same car again?

Roger,

Do you recall what year that was?

I think that was the Ian Walker car. The BC at LM book says "Ian Walker

Doesn't Paul Matty own the IWR car now? Ahh yes, here you go.....

I've put a copy of the Elan at Le Mans pic in the photo section at
Yahoo. Definitely the same car as the Wherrett one, but in b/w not
colour. Full size is 300kb and 1512x862 pixels.

When we at Le Mans last year (courtesy of Bentley Motors, thank-you guys), Ian Phillips and myself went to a supermarket- down the Mulsanne straigt, straight on to the next town and in the foyer there was a display of about six cars, one of which was a green 26r which had some Le Mans history!! However, I do not think that it was the car shown in the photograph and I seem to remember that it raced in a historic event, rather than the 24 hrs (though I may be wrong). Ian has a photo which I will ask him to post in the photos section.

Cheers,

Pete

Follow these links to the photos section to see the 26r we saw near Le Manslast year. It looks very much like the one shown on page 77 of the Duncan Wherrett book to me, although it has reverted to pop up headlights and has neater front flares. Check the mirrors, window opening arrangement, single wiper and position of bonnet catches.

Ian was really photographing the lady on the left, the car just happened tobe there!
