Thanks Sean and everyone else for your replies. I've used the 711M
block in my Elan for the past 15 years (probably only 5 to 10
thousand miles though). The original block hasn't been used since
1986 and is in great shape-never been rebored. The 711M block was
bored out to the max-85 or 86mm IIRC. The 711M block has some
advantages, but I found it to be a real pain in the butt. The timing
cover leaked badly due to the taller block (harder to seal up), it
also leaked badly around that rubber tube beneath the carbs which
connects the block to the head (larger hole in the block, and great
distance between block and head). The cam cover would rub on the
hood. Cam timing was a challenge to get right.

Here's a good related article:

It was a long time ago, but I seem to recall it was about a half
inch or so. The block is still about a quarter inch or so taller than
the original however.

I never did. David couldn't tell me where to look either. I've solved the problem by leaving my SS S3 as stock as it was when I got it. It does have small diameter springs and the engine may not be stck, but not far off. All my Lotus are Webered.

I solved the problem of the broken engine in the 45/26R by buying another motor w/ a Gus Hutcinson head and bottom end is I think a 1600 xflo crank ina 1500 (same as TC) block, TC rods and short deck pistons. Don't know whatcams it has, but this was one of the two engines from the ex-Jackie Oliver26R that used to be here in Columbus. That car is in Minneapolis now.

Thanks Will, you're welcome.

I'm building an 1796 on a 711M block at the moment, using 82mm steel crank and 83.5 Omega pistons. I did some calculations and ordered a set of 4.926 rods. Unfortunately these rods are too short with the 82mm crank, as the crank balance webs foul the piston bosses around BDC. So now I have changed them for 5.1" rods. I will not now have to deck the block as they are 3 thou above the original deck, which just had a service skim when I rebored to 83.5. I didn't go any wider for the sake of reliability.

I am using a tall block front cover assy from Burtons, and breather tube alloy extension bush from QED, along with long rubbing strip and timing chain. I plan to do some alterations to the engine mounts to drop the engine to clear the bonnet/cam cover contact.

Thanks for the link to the Lotus Cortina site, very useful. My block has markings "711M 6015BA" Anyone any idea what the "BA " means ? Also any idea what is the max safe rebore on T15 ?

I buy mine from any decent industrial chain supplier. it is a standard 3/8 pitch chain 120 links for a Lotus block and 122 for X-flow block. They can make it without a masterlink ie continuous- which I prefer. There are two quality chains available , always the top quality.

Further to all the comments on this subject, can anyone help identify my
engine? I bought my S3 SE FHC in the US a couple of years ago as a large
pile of bits and repatriated it to Blighty (it is RHD). It is possible it
had a trick engine when new but speaking to the supplying dealer (its a long
story) at the weekend he thinks not.

Anyway I have my doubts that the block that came with the car is original to
it but would welcome the groups comments based on the following markings. On
the right hand side it simply has the 'fomoco' logo cast into the block
wall. On the left hand side there is a lot more: 'T8', 'B' above a small
circle, numbers 1 thru to 0 cast in a circular pattern with a pointer cast
at '2', 'OH 28' and finally '711M 6015 BA' which makes me suspect that this
is a 711M block rather than an Elan block or am I jumping to conclusions?
The only stamped number I can find is on the rear face of the block
(flywheel end) and this seems to read '1 1 0 0623' thought the first' 0' is
very faint and may in fact be something else. The block is painted black and
has no 'Ls' cast between the engine mounting holes. There is a luggage label
attached to it from, I suspect, a machine shop; this is printed 'Monarch'
and has pre printed information in both English and French (Canadian shop?)
with "Block planed 40 th, $60" hand written on it. The bores are 82 mm (by
tape measure, not accurately), it has a rope rear oil seal, 4 bolt crank and
the front cover, which is still bolted to the block, sits flush with the top
of the block with no spacer - has someone hack sawed a chunk off the a 711M
block to suit?

In the pile of bits there is a Weber head with 40 DCOE 18s, single groove
cams and a green cam cover.

Can you guys tell me anything from this or is there anything else I should
look at.

Apologies for the long winded mail - any pointers much appreciated.

has cut the top of and fitted the 4bolt crank(1500) what con rods are
fitted 125E? or 1600 these are + - 2.5mms longer or the old skinny
1500 type?

Your engine has already been converted to 711M (or X-flow) block
so no need to jump anywhere.

They obviuosly used the original rear cover and they used the old crank so they could reuse the original flywheel.
They surely must have hacked a lot off the 711M block to enable the use of the old crank with a smaller stroke.
Can you check the casting nos on the conrods?
