S3 Door latch.

PostPost by: Brian Walton » Thu Sep 19, 2002 10:37 pm

Oh God have I started something here!

Let me recap. I stated that there must be 10's of thousands of old
Morris/ Austin 1100 door handles wanting a new home in NZ. The only
place that I know that they are/ were available off the car in some type
of order is within a business in Auckland called Strong Brothers. They
were/ or are (somebody could tell us) Mini wreckers. They had dozens
of sets available at about NZ$15 per side. Make sure you get a set.
You may have to pay more for this service (somebody has to try all the
keys!). They also sell the 14 sets of keys!

That's a thought. I should have purchased every one of the 14 key
combinations then the world of not only S3 Elans could open to me but
also all the 1100's in the country!

I'm 1500 km South of Auckland in the Southern Alps so can't help.

Brian,

I too would be interested in a set. This would hopefully include striker
plates and the latch mechanisms, if possible.

Brian,

We had MG 1100s here in the states. I remember breaking many of them 25
years ago when I was working as a mechanic, putting myself through school.
This was before I had my first Elan, so I didn't know to keep the latches.
Now they're all gone to the crusher, long ago. This was never a real popular
car over here and I would be surprised if there are 1000 left in running/
non-running condition at all in the whole country.

If you want to remove some, and can get them for reasonable money, I'd take
a few sets. I've got three S3's and hope I will be able to enjoy them for
many years to come. I'm not concerned about keys, since I have never locked
the doors, only the boot.

Hi All,

Following on from Brian's email, and the heap of responses he got from folk looking for door latches.

We still have minis and 1100's etc on the road as everyday cars. Yes, kiwiland is close to a banana republic when it comes to old cars still being on the road!

I go to the local wreckers here all the time. Its an outfit similar to the Strong Bros outfit that Brian referred too.

As there seems to be such demand for these latches handles etc, next time I am at the wreckers I will obtain as many as I can and advise the list accordingly.

Ray

Thanks for that Ray. I found out via the local wrecker in Queenstown
this weekend that "Clintz" in Dunedin also has a stock of 1100 bits.

If they are South Island cars in the CC wreckers then the pitter marks
on the chrome should be few. I was lucky enough to get a matching
pair as good as the saw the light of day in 63.

Ray,
If you do manage to round up some door latches I'm sure that there is enough interest from the list that you won't be left holding them. It is verysupportive of you to try to see what you can do. If nothing turns up we will understand.
Good luck,

Don
