Seat belts and seat catches

PostPost by: davidallen » Tue Dec 09, 2003 4:34 pm

Hi,

I am in the process of fitting rear lap belts on my +2. The car still has
the original plates mounted on the transmission tunnel, but there are no
holes in the padded U section which fits over the tunnel through which to
fit the bolts. Before I take my drill to the seats can someone please
confirm this is how the belts are fitted?

The rear seats on my +2 have lost the original catches and consequently keep
falling forward. What type of catch was originally fitted? The chrome sort
as fitted to hoods, and was the stud mounted on the rear parcel shelf?

Thanks

David

Up to '73 (I think), the seat back used to fold forward to make a parcel
shelf. I think it was held up by two clips mounted on straps. On my seat I
have two broken straps but no clips....

Hi,

Surely someone must have fitted rear seat belts to a +2? Could you please
give me some advice as I don't wish to make any mistakes drilling holes in
the rear seats!

Do the belt bolts pass through the seat centre section into the transmission
tunnel, or is there another method of fixing which has not occurred to me?

Thanks in advance.

David

my 50/1915 was shipped to the u.s. with rear belts. threaded metal plates are
attached to the driveshaft side of the tunnel and the wheel side of the inner
wheel well to secure the seatbelt bolts. the belt attachment plates use a
.25" thick washer or standoff about .75" od to space the belt plate away from the
fibreglass body and allow some angular rotation; similar to the front belt
attachment. the plastic vacuum formed console has half moon cutouts to allow
the console to just drop over the standoff.

Hi,

Thanks for all your comments. However, things a never black and white,
especially when Lotus's are concerned!

All the comments I have received talk about a centre trim over the tunnel. I
had a look at a '72 +2 over the weekend, and that also had a large tunnel
cover.

However, in my car the tunnel trim stops short, and the rear seat assembly
is one large fibreglass moulding, complete with the back section, seat bases
and the tunnel cover. There are no hole to locate the bolts, and because of
it's size, it is very difficult to locate the seat belt plates and nuts. Has
anyone else a similar seat or was this an after market modification?

A warning, as mentioned by Nigel below. All my seat belt reinforcement
plates had turned to powder, and would have been as strong as a wet paper
bag. (This includes the front belts!) I suggest you check them ASAP.

doing this off list since have various company restrictions here.

I fitted rear seat belts last year. Used all new stainless brackets from SJ
Sportscars - the originals were totally rusted out.

On the central trim over the tunnel you should find two holes pre-drilled in
the plastic of the tunnel. These holes are then covered over with the
vinyl. You should be able to feel these by pressing. The holes ROUGHLY
align with the holes in the brackets. I took the trim piece right out to
make life easier. The alignment was not straight forward - needed a lot of
prying with a screwdriver before getting the bolt started

Hope that helps

Regards
