S3 Gearlever gaiter & doorpulls

PostPost by: ardee_selby » Fri Jun 15, 2001 9:51 am

Hi Listers,
Re: August'67 S3 S/E Coupe (36/7367).

Has anyone got a square section gearlever gaiter similar to (if not
the same as) the Ford Corsair type?
I've only ever seen the round type fitted (books and in the flesh).
Have always thought it was a DPO's attempt at customising. However,
unlike some of the other butchery, the hole in the centre console is
very neat/accurate and looks original.

Also, the interior door-pulls are the black plastic S4 pattern in the
door panel area, not the chromed type up by the frame. Have always
put this one down to transition from one parts bin to the next.
Anyone the same?

Cheers - TIY

Hi, - the Corsair gaiter is the same as the Cortina GT and Lotus I believe.I have a few on the shelf, and they are available from the Cortina Mk.1 owners club in UK. Where about are you...?

RDS,
Yes,i also have the black plastic door pulls on an otherwise standard S3
doorpanels.
This parts bin transition did take place before the introduction of the S4.
I have also seen an untouched one owner S3 car , 36/7776,with this same
doorpull.

Do you know if this is the same square gear stick gaiter as used on Plus
2 elans?

The gaiter on my plus 2 is starting to split so I could well be looking
for a replacement.

Ian,
Thanks for the confirmation. Another one put to bed.
Oh, how I envy anyone with an untouched Elan.

Richard S

Dag,
Apologies for the poor wording of my question.
I should have said "Has anyone got one got....fitted
to their car at the moment"
I have the square gaiter (fitted when I bought it) but
I've never seen another in an Elan, only round
pattern. Thanks for the source info if I ever need to
replace it.

Regards - Richard S (I'm in Southampton)

RDS,

Sounds like you have a S3 Super Safety. That would explain the door pulls. Do you also have dual brake MC, Stomberg buble bonnet(but w/ Weber head), low back seats with perforated material centers and are non-tilting, rocker switches and reflectors at four corners? Also, you may not know what normalS3 door handles are like, but yours should be shorter and stick out into the recessed area of the door.

That still doesn't explain the square shift boot. That's got to be an add-on of PO and there is probably more than one PO.

Dave, I don't know really, but I would not be surprised if it was. I can check for dimension if you like.

Roger,
I dont think any S3 could ever have originally had a Stromberg bonnet,as
this head (and presumeably bonnet to suit)was only introduced well into S4
production at chassis no 8600.
Anybody know otherwise ?

Are your interior door handles plastic flappers or chromed stick handles. If you have plastic flaps, your car has been abused. I have 45-7380 and it is a SS, one of the earliest ones. I had a friend who owned 45-7450 and it'sonly SS feature was the swinging plastic door pulls. A strange period in Elan production. S4 interior latches would probably only work with S4 latches which are vastly different from S3. Borrow a digital camera and send photos off line and I can identify for you.
