Door latch "ON" mechanism

Okay, what is the real purpose of this diabolical device. When in
the "ON" position it prevents the door from being opened or unlocked
from the inside. If it gets set and you close the door, forget about
it, you could be locked in. Unless there is power to roll the windows
down.
Thanx,
Mike

My 66 S2 has this lock. I have always assumed that this is a theft
deterrant. I always put it on when I lock my car.
It would stop a thief from cutting a hole in the top and reaching
through to unlock the door from the inside. To get in they would have
to rip part of the top away, this would probably bring unwanted
attention from passers by.
I would agree that it is unnecessary on a hardtop but maybe it is just a
carry over from the early cars.
Cheers

Are Morris 1100 door locks shared with the Elan? Is that why Elans have
these latches?
Child_Lock.jpg indicates that the child locks are on all 4 doors on an
1100. This would be very unusual, most cars have them on the rear doors
only. They are to stop children accidentally (or otherwise) opening the
doors (and possibly falling out) while you are going along. To have
them on all 4 doors would indicate that the purpose is to lock kids
inside the car.
Should never need a child lock on the drivers door (even though I have
often been described as a big kid).
Cheers

Wow, I didn't think they had these things back then. I have only
seen cild locks on doors other than the front.

Yes - Just found "she who must be obeyed's" workshop manual in the

I'm not sure, the manual doesn't clarify. I think it's a common part
front and rear. I/we spent a lot of time in the back of her 1100 so I
know they were there:-)) I would ask her, but it's 3.20am and don't
think she'd appreciate the question:-)
Don't forget the passenger side, though.

Excuse my butting in, but if you're talking about what I think you're talking
about, consider this. My Elan S2 has a pivoted 3/32" diameter stem
projecting out a few inches below the inside door latch handle. Is this what
you're talking about? If so, If so I had assumed this was a door lock.
Famous Frank informed me that this lever actually locks the position of the
sliding side window, not the door latch.
