What a bit of kit

PostPost by: steveww » Wed May 26, 2004 2:26 pm

Just come back from a quick blast around the local lanes. Wow that was
fun. I have only owned an Elan for just under a year and only now I am
starting to get really confident at throwing it round corners. I just
have difficulty in believing that it goes round at such high speeds.
Those skinny little economy tyres should slide all over the place. I
keep thinking this car is 35 years old but the performance levels are
bang up to date. No surprise that the reviewers of the time were so
impressed.

I know there are a few die hards out there that use their Elan every day
.... For those of us that have other cars I would be interested to know
what else you all drive?

I have:
Lotus Elan S4 SE dhc
Alfa Romeo 147
Smart Pulse Coupe

I had a 66 S2 back in the 70's that I drove daily for ten years. It spent
most of its life with me in reliable running condition (admittedly with lots
of TLC) up to the point when I sold it at about 150,000 miles. Among other
things, I was constantly amazed at how well, carefully driven, it behaved in
the snow. The 66 S3 I now have sees basically only clear weather.

My current daily driver is a 2003 Saab Arc that has power/electronic
everything which means that short of changing a tire, I don't think I'd want
to, or am capable of doing, any work on the thing myself. Here's an
example: when I first got the car, the CD player wasn't working. At the
shop it was discovered, only after replacing the unit and having it still
not work, that the car hadn't been programmed to recognize the fact that it
had the player! This happened with several other functions as well such
that the mechanic working on the car described himself as an "electronic
diagnostic technician".

FWIW, my wife drives a 2000 VW Passat wagon, which has been a very reliable
car.
