New glovebox

PostPost by: simonknee » Thu Mar 18, 2004 2:46 pm

I finally bought a new glove box from PM (the old one fell out within hours
of me buying the car 2 years ago)
I have a parts manual at home but am too curious as to what the various
holes are to wait!
There is a 50mm hole at the rear, the "switch of death" cut-out, and two
holes on the top at the front, about 40mm apart.
Also is there a specific item to fix the box to the dash via the 7 holes
around the edge and is there any other support required (at rear for
instance?)

cheers

Simon,
You've got it right. No other support other than those around the
dash. Nothing in the rear.

Simon,

The large hole in the rear wall of the glovebox gives access to the far end of the bonnet release cable where the
locking nipple is located and allows cable adjustment without removing fascia. There is a grommet that seals this
hole.

The seven holes around the periphery of the glovebox are for the screws that hold it to the rear of the fascia. There
are corresponding brackets screwed to the rear of the fascia - two screws to the top and bottom brackets and also the
side nearer the centre of the fascia, the remaining bracket is very short and has only one screw.

The two holes in the top are for the touch lock mechanism of the later series of cars. There should also be two sets
of holes in the bottom that are for tying up the tube from the heater to the nearside eyeball vent.

The parts book is absolutely invaluable.

Now I've checked the parts book I see the four brackets, that I don't have
of course!
They obviously self-tap into the dash but do you screw or plastic rivet the
box to the brackets?
As an early S3 I think I am supposed to use a lock.
The car has one but it may not be original, it has a rotating catch on the
back but the pictures show a retracting bolt type??
Was there a "keep" mounted to the dash 'cos the pictures don't show one?
Actually I'd rather have the touch-lock (which I don't have either) but will
leave a barrel in the hole for looks!

Having just the the dash back in to my S4 after a total rewire I am very
familiar with the all its fittings.

The glove box is secured the the right angled brackets by small
selftappers. The bracket is secured to the back of the dash by small screws.

The touch lock on mine looks very new so I guess you can still get them.
Even if you can't get original ones you should be able to get something
similar from B&Q.

Hope you have a good day at Ally Pally and the weather picks up. I would
love to go but other commitments prevent me. However it is the Lotus
show at Donnington next week so I will have to wait for my fix until then.

while were on the subject.......
when I replaced my dash I reverted back to the original
type of hinge rather than the piano type......
could someone just confirm to me the way in which they
are fitted in someone elses car.....as I have found it possible to
nmake them work in two orientations......it all depends on where
the 'stop' goes.....
cheers
