Sound proofing a coupe

i just found the latest link for a product I used years ago.
http://www.quietcar.net/?google&_kk=qui ... bAod80wv0w
This topic has come up in other threads before, but this one demonstrates the sound differences. Just thought I would pass it along to those restoring coupes. Sort of a waste for the DHC Elans. I used three coats in the trunk, doors, roof and interior for a 20 DB sound reduction. What I now hear is the air leak around the windows which I never heard before I used this stuff.

from their site:
Better than Dynamat!
QuietCar Car & Truck noise reduction and vibration damping coating can be sprayed-on, rolled-on, or brushed-on the underside of your vehicle to reduce and even eliminate most road noise, engine noise, and other vibrations. Excellent for sound deadening in high-end audio installations. A typical car or truck uses 2 to 8 gallons depending on thickness, locations, and number of coats. Thicker layers and 2 to 3 coats eliminates more noise. Up to 20dB of noise reduction can be achieved. See application instructions for further details. This technology absorbs noise, rather than masks it, and works 2-3 times better than mats (such as Dynamat for example). Excellent for SUV's, trucks, and virtually any vehicle which can be enhanced by lower noise. Actual contents weight per gallon is 12.58lbs (about 8.5 lbs/gallon when applied and cured)
Shipping weight is 15lbs. Shipping is calculated at checkout before you submit your order.
Cleans easily with warm soapy water
QuietCar 1 Gal. QC-1 $59.95
Sound's interesting, I wonder how it grinds off if you have to make a repair?

Hi Gary, If I remember they said you can paint over it and it can be sanded once it was dry. i only used it in the interior. I had already used a different coating on the wheel wells, engine and undercoating areas. It was a rubbery type coating for rock protection etc.

Weighs how much per gallon? ---- 8 1/2 lbs !!! total needed 2 - 8 gallons per vehicle, does this stuff add lightness? 8 gallons of this stuff is like having a full trunk or boot to carry around all the time.
Have you all been seduced bythe modern car holy grail of minimum 'noise vibration and harshness' ?
if you don't like the noise wear earplugs!

Thanks for that. I'd say the 600ml cans will be plenty for a Lotus

The way I am reading Sarto's reply is that he used 2 possibly 3 gallons or 17 or 24.5 pounds of sound deadener. to kill a pant load of noise. if wind noise is the last objectional sound than its probably a fairly effective product. my guess on the 8 gallons of product are for a full sized SUV or 4 door full sized pickup where you wouldn't notice. On my F250 I sure can't tell if the 2 - 20 gallon tanks are empty or full unless I look in my wallet.

The weight quoted is the weight with liquid in the can, mostly solvents and water. Water weighs around 8 1/2 lbs/gal as I recall.
After application, all the liquid evaporates, leaving a light coating.
Someone could experiment and weigh a certain amount of liquid, then weigh it again in the dry state.

Quoted from the quietcar web site which is what I posted in the 2nd post on this topic.

If your worried about weight, leave out the passenger seat. That way only your dog will ride along with you and he doesn't talk much so its pretty quiet...

i used up all of 3 gallons for the coupe. I probably put it on a little thick. They said that a fourth coat would not be as effective as a three coat application. After three coats its like the law of diminishing return. I probably added 24 +- pounds after it dried and the sloppy mess and paint brush cleanup. I figured a few more trip to the Gym would balance that. Its been 5 years on that plan and don't ask. The coating makes the Elan sound more solid and feels like a modern car. Getting three coats inside the doors took the longest time but was the most noticeable when you shut the doors.
Richard's NOXUDOL 3100 sound like a sister company with the same story.
