Another Elan on the road.

PostPost by: nhhiker » Sun Sep 05, 2010 1:03 am

After just under 2 years, I have 36/7502 on the road. I got the plates on it Friday and did a few miles to find out what needed fixing. Today I needed wipers for it, so a 20 mile in the Elan to pick them up and Home. Checked a few more things done. Off for the LONG drive. 100 miles to see how things would go. Only problem was during stop and go traffic, one of the webers flooded like the float was too high. Water temp only got to 90c. Pulled the top off and the level was fine. Stopped for a pint, When I went back out and drove home, All good!

Will see the stateside members @ the LOG this year with it. :D

Bill,
Good work! Gary, Carl, Dave, Chris, Tony Thompson, Jim Goodman, Lance Clark, Dick Fryberger and others were down at Lime Rock for Day 2 of the historic weekend today. Next year I hope you will come down with the coupe. Lots of Mk 7s, Mk 11s, two Mk 9s, at least three Elans (dare I say one possible real 26R) but no Elites  out on the circuit/ Gary and I will be posting images. Dave went out for his second session carrying enough fuel for three laps, bummer, it was a twelve lapper!

Here are a few pictures this morning. Car still needs the door cards done, but this is allowing me to drive for the time being.

Russ, Sounds like a great day @ Lime Rock. Planning on being in Ayer for lunch this week with the Elan.

Thanks Bill for sharing

This Super Safety S3 Elan was a bunch of bits that Bill picked up in mid October 2008. I took some photos when I went to look at it to determine what it was the Bill was getting himself in for. So on the 21st of October of that year I went up and snapped these photos and we looked at all of the numbers on the car and determined that it had not been messed with badly but would need a lot of work. Lots of money too but even more money was spent at Jamie's pub buying steak tips with rice and corn bread. Many trips to the Elan warehouse museum in Scituate to borrow parts to re-fabricate new pieces where necessary. Bill is the one person I know that doesn?t stall out on projects of this magnitude, he sets a goal and it may be interrupted by monetary constraints, it does not die. This is another great job done by Bill and one that everyone should look at that has a project Elan waiting to work on. The body was pretty clean without much damage but still presented a challenge. Bill asked me to come up and take a look before he was about to paint it, I did and just before leaving I asked, ?did you fit the bumpers yet??. So he dragged them down out of the attic and the rear fit nicely but the front needed to be sectioned a ? an inch to make it fit. There is no way the claylastic strip would have covered the gap, If he had one, now I don?t think it even needs that detail as it looks great without it.

Gary

Bill,
Looks great and glad it is coming to LOG as it will make a very nice addition to the "OLD LOTUS" area. Maybe the new kids will start to understand the glory of the early cars. I will keep an eye out to see the fruits of all the hours invested!

Gary thanks for the old links.

Hopefully Dave Belden will be there with his Mark IX to exemplify the early cars. Many of us think of Elans as later generation Lotus.

Indeed. There's a reason for the designations 26/36/45/50.

Hey Bill,

Very nice job. And thank you Gary for posting the "before" story and photos. I look forward tp seeing it at LOG. Yellow is one of my favorite colors for the Elan Coupe. It just looks "right" on the car. Beautiful!

Bill has been driving the Coupe a bit (finished off the first tank of fuel) and brought it to Wednesday lunch. I haven't been to the weekly gathering since the middle of July so I made the hour and 20 minute drive in Beau's F250 doghouse. I stopped and talked with Larry about some apples later in the day and he told me to take all the cider apples I could. Off to Chris's shop for the pre lunch gathering and folks seemed to be running a bit late but at 12:05 Bill arrived with 36/7502 and Beau did his job as the official greeter. Beau likes Elans as they are right on his level and gets right up close to say hello.

After Lunch we all went back to Chris's and continued the inspection and Andy Bodge arrived with his 1965 S2 Elan and compairisons were made.

Dave seems to be telling Beau about the stick that he was going to toss for him later over at Carl's house. Beau doesn't seem to be paying any attention but when we got over to Carl's he found a ball and told him it was "time to play, sucker"
