Tune day for Webers

Hello All---
I want to make an announcement that I now have perfectly tuned 151 webers. No bucking, no flat spots, smooth at idle to wide open. It pulls, in all gears, like it had 15 more HP. and when it hit 4,500 rpm it had a surge of new power. Hard to believe, but our old friend, Keith Franck, after years of research, has re-engineered the E-tubes and hypojets to perfection. What he has done to webers is quite scientific and over my head so I copied a post below of some of the details from Keith's site.

> He already had my experimental e-tubes that were 8.35mm in diameter so the impedance is okay. Next we found the front carb had the fuel level set too high by 1mm so we lowered it back down to 25mm. The first set of hypojets to get installed were .020" ones and when the rpms was elevated using the idle speed screw it got hung at about 2000rpms and it was spitting, that's a dead giveaway clue it's too lean! The stock idlejets were 45 something so next we stuck in .026" hypojets. That did the trick, it immediately revved up and down like a sewing machine. Went for a test drive and it runs absolutely flawlessly. The only issue to resolve is whether or not it needs apertures in the first progressive holes because it did exhibit symptoms of having a lazy idle. Sarto installed a set of temporary apertures and just drove off to test if those will in fact make the slight lazy idle symptom go away. Depending on how that goes will determine if we need to glue in the permanent apertures or not.

He did not need the apertures after all, reducing the idle speed a tad is all it took to stop the lazy idle symptom. Gave him some of the 1mm and 2mm spacers to elevate the e-tubes to test later on. He left to go over to Mike Ostrov's to have Mike see the results firsthand. It runs like sewing machine is the best way I can describe it but also hauls ass when you want too.
We did the tuning without using an AFM. Only tuned it at this juncture to get the tractability perfect. I might be able to improve the fuel mileage a bit more but he needs to drive it to determine what it's getting now.

Mike Ostrov drove my Elan and confirmed that it runs like no other Elan with webers.

Sarto,
How do those of us in the hinterlands get a Keith Franck tune? Will he send the parts? Tune the cabs if we send them? Inquiring minds with less than perfect Webers want to know.

Ross, here is how to get in touch and learn what Keith has developed and accomplished on tuning webers. [email protected]WRONG!!
Be prepared to be amazed.

Just finished fitting a set of Keiths Hypojets and emulsion tubes - took me around 90 minutes to get my Plus2S 130/5 running like its fuel injected, no air/fuel ratio meter, just easy to do with a few on road test runs that Keith has identified
The car is fitted with 40DCOE31's jetted to standard Lotus big valve specs but with the fuel level set using Keiths optical level guage, the standard emulsion tubes replaced with Keiths tubes and the standard idle jets replaced with Keiths 0.20 hypojets
Examples of things you cant even get close to in a Weber twin cam even with lots of dyno time and a old style Weber tuning expert doing in it - and I know because I spent lots of dyno timing trying to do it and never got a road car this good on Webers.
- dump the thropttle in 5th gear and 1500 rpm and it just pulls smoothly and strongly away
- it starts hot or cold on the 2nd compression stroke just like a modern injected car
- any gear any throttle any load just silky smooth acceleration, no hesitiation , no flat spots
Hopefully Keith gets these into commercial production soon as he has truely achieved a remarkable step forward in Weber carb tuning and flexibility of performance across a very broad spectrum of engine speed and throttle position.
cheers
Rohan

Jas, Keith being a weber guy?? Try his site on that question. http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/sidedraft_central/
I'm trying to put some miles on to check for gas mileage. Its has been wet out, maybe this weekend will fine me on the back roads.
Keith may have added increased value to Elans running webers by using his new adjustable E-tubes and hypojets design. Like Rohan, it is a pleasure to drive.

While the jetting for Delortos follows the same general layout to the Webers the detail is different in terms of things like the push fit diameters between the components.
The new style jets and tuning methods that Keith has developed could be applied to Delortos but at this stage all the work has been done on Webers. I swapped the Delortos on the Plus 2 for a spare set of Webers I had so I could trial Keith jets.
If this gets to commercial production then I see no reason that the same style jetting could not be developed for Delortos in the future which would be great as it would save me having to swap out the 45 DHLA Delortos on my Esprit and i dont have a spare set of 45DCOEs for that application lying around, and I sure want to get my Esprit running like the Plus 2 does now
cheers

Rohan,
I'm guessing that you are saying that these tuned Webers are even a lot better than standard Dellortos? (Always found the Dellortos to be pretty good myself - except maybe semi warm start).

Yes the tuned Webers are much better than the standard setting Delortos or Webers on a twin cam and are better than the best tweaked carbs on a twin cam after lots of dyno work . Keith has been sending development versions to a few people around the world to trial his developments with different cars and fuels to prove it was not unique to his early Elan and California fuels with their high ethanol content. He has not yet sorted out how to commercialise his work but I am sure he will soon, so far just a few of us have been lucky to benefit from the development program.

"but I am sure he will soon".
If he doesn't Rohan I reckon you need to convince him that a test is required in N.Z. because our gas is sure to be different in some way...
At the least he could send me the specs and I'll machine up my own.
Cheers
Ralph.

Hi all,
Here is the latest update on Keith Franck's Weber tuning. I have been using three additional revisions since my last posting on Webers. Each revision was an increase in performance. My fuel consumption was 25 mpg, the next was about 30 and my last run was 36 mpg. Keith has a new version that he has indicated I should get a few mpg better.
My Elan can idle at 600 rpm and in a rolling 4th gear at 900 rpm does not stumble and pulls through all gears.
I'll post the results after we install the latest E-Tubes
