Drag racing burn outs using street tyres

Reading the section on burnouts in Drag Racing Basics by Cindy Crawford (no, not that one!) I came across this:
If you are driving on drag radials, do not go through the water box. Go around it. Sometimes you can back up towards the water box, but do not go into it, and do a quick burn out there.
If you are driving on regular street tyres, go around the water box. With street tyres it is not necessary to do a burn out.
Any comments?

I know nothing about drag tyres and water boxes and burnouts for drag racing. However for a standing race start in my Elan I can get off the line quicker with the rear tyres warmed up after a warm up lap than I can when they are stone cold without that lap. This is using track day road legal radials e.g. Yoko A-048R. I would assume that some form of warm up would be desirable for these tyres if using them for a 1/4 mile drag.
