Ed, might be different here in the UK but standard practice with four lights was to have two main and two dipped (the only exception I can think of being the early Esprit), so ex- four-light units would not be suitable. I think that motor-bike lamps would be a better source, they would have the two filaments and might even come in a useful pod.

the 4 light system here has hi and low beam ---ed

I remember getting 5 3/4" units with both main and dipped beam many years ago, but I can't remember for the life of me what the car was. There were two variants - one has a small "window" (about 1" diameter) in the reflector to allow an externally mounted side light bulb to shine through. For the Elan you don't need the window but the site above only has the sealed beam unit with the window (ref 5731).

Hi,
I used the 5 3/4" lights and the perspex covers in my recent rebuild (still not finished !)
Quite easy to do except for the huge patience needed constructing and fitting the brackets on to the covers and fixing to the bodywork.

Almost 88.476% sure, however, on another well-respected www forum I've just seen an original Gold Bug with 26/R headlamp covers and normal pivoting units.
Maybe I should buy a Gordon-Keeble?

I just posted the following on the Nostalgia Forum and realised it is probably more appropriate here:
I was thinking about this car last night and realised that I went with Nino Epifani and his crew to Sears Point with the Gold Bug Elan shortly after Nino had restored it in the early/mid eighties. What triggered the memory was the presence of Dan Marvin in the ex Villeneuve car at Mission last weekend. It was Dan-at that point the most recent Formula Atlantic Champion-who was the test driver in the Elan that day! I recall that the main point of the test was determining which front sway bar to use-15/16ths or 1 inch-and as I remember it the smaller bar was chosen by Dan as better. Serious stuff for a guy like me who checked the tire pressures before a race-maybe!
