There is enough grain on the photo you posted where i would not make any bets on the color...... However, looking at the driver in the color devoid car, I'm thinking it is not the wee scot at the wheel...
Here is the photo i mentioned in an earlier post - Mallory in 64 - captioned with drivers Arundell/Stewart mentoned in earlier post , from the Chris Harvey book , no credit on the photographer -
George
PS - I doubt its Oliver in the other picture, he was not up to speed yet...

Don't forget that Walker made cars for other folks; which were not gold.
Also don't forget that there has/have been Gold Bug replica(s) built more recently by the Walkers.
I'm not exactly sure what the question is in this tread any more.

Hi Georges,
Just had a look at your doc:
This one clearly show the 26R of the Chequered Flag #65 at Mallory Park, driven to victory by Jackie.
On mine, That car had the #6. So...
We are definitly speaking about different races.
Concerning the possible color of #77, your picture show me that I may be right, more than giving me a doubt... On yours, I am very tempted to say, yes it's a goldbug.
So at least, we can say that mine isn't Mallory Park 65'...
Let's dig a while or wait for color pictures!
Christian.

For what it's worth, I haven't heard any mention of numbers from Doug Nye's 1972 book "LOTUS '61-'71: Design Revolution". Anyway, very little reference to actual races involving Elans, but on page 272 he mentions, 52 Series 1 26R's, and 47 Series 2 26R's. Nothing to back it up but the book was published in '72 which is very period. Just scanned through the book this morning for the first time in 20+ years and it appears to be gold mine for those looking for formula car specifics, especially the account of so many races during the time.
As a side note he mentions the end of Lotus Components in late 1970, and it then becoming Lotus Racing. Interesting book that would take time to digest.

Same race, getting closer, the Peter Arundell's goldbug definitly wearing #66:

No way; Having seen that document, on my picture, the leading car has a solid color, slightly darker than white.
A IWR yellow body/green stripe !?!

Hi Ed,
Did you know David Butler of Scarboro Ont, Elan 241? I got these suspension notes from his race Elan back in 1972.

Hi Ed
Looks like they need some photos of Willy's Elan
http://www.racingsportscars.com/driver/ ... s-CDN.html
If you have some as found photos they may be nice to add to his portfolio.
"Goebbel's Auto Body"
This may explane the front end treatment of the Elan and why it looks so special (different?).
You know we all would like to know more and I sure you can and will offer up things as time goes on, I know that you need to play your cards close to your chest but the secret has been held for 8 or 9 years now? Surely you have better pictures of when you first acquired it. I guess you just like the game, and if you let the cat out of the bag the game would end so we will more than likely have to wait some more.

nope!!! sorry Gary -- thats the way it came --from ---Willy s Downtown Porsche on Huron street --Toronto --to the previous owner to me [also a body shop ]---there is no evidence of 'body work ' on the car --its just as it came from the moulds ----[from SHAAPECRAAAAAFT] ----its is the same front end shape as the photo of 42 driven by Narriere that I posted previously on the thread between Al Pease and the other car --I must repair a small hole under the front passenger lower tray from when it slipped off the jack though--but Im finished with all that shit now --I know the car is legit ---THE CAR was blue with a black top then --it was the colour you see now when I acquired it -it was a photo in a programme my friend claimed he had but turned out he cant find it --I cant get on the site to send a pic --And you know 'playing close to the vest' has never been my strong point ---give Beau a cookie and a good ear rub for me ---as an aside --Gary Magwood listed on that site as a starter in FF applied for the number --0--and was denied as at the time the officials determined that--0-- was not a number ----so he chose 273 ----the SCENTIFIC number for absolute zero --just an insight on the resourceful approach to racing and the official outlook of racing then -ed

Hi Ed
Well it didn't get molded like that at Lotus. It is a one off or it was modified somewhere. No one on this forum has ever seen another quite like it. It had to be a pretty professional job if you can't find any trace of it being bonded on. That kind of means that a complete nose replacement. No one would do a complete body mold and only pull ONE unit from the molds and then just loose the molds. I am truly sorry that I was feeling so bad when I came up to Brian Robinson's to pick up 36/6292, the car would have been great to see at that time. Anyway, please do enjoy what you have, it is a special Elan no matter what anyone thinks including me. I don?t know what or where or when things were done, but if Willy only had the one Elan then it was before Mosport in 1967, or maybe it was being done at that time as it is listed as DNA ?did not arrive?. Some day someone may shed some light on it but more than likely as time passes so dose the chance of the real history of the Elan becoming known. Good thing? Bad thing? I don?t know, hopefully someone will step up and say ?that?s my old Elan and this is the story?. I know I would love to hear what 36/6292 was in its day but no one has stepped forward with info on it either.

WELLLL -- may be the Shape craft thought isn't so far off the mark AFTER ALL --everything else I first stated about the car - then as now --and before this whole magootska started has been pretty much proven correct ----IN-SPITE OF ALL THE EXPERTS -- ---[here we go]--------about the DNA -the practice at the time was to 'enter' the big events with no intention of racing to get the passes and and credentials so you rub elbows with the greats and get an all access pass for you and 3 of your buddies-a 3 day GP ticket was 15 bucks WITH NO PADDOCK PASESS ---entry for a car was 35 bucks and if you didn't take any track time CRDA refunded YOUR MONEY -ALSO IF YOU ENTERED THE EVENT FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR YOUr NAME WAS AUTOMATICALLY entered in the list for next year ---------------[-snows heavy Im for waiting a few weeks ]---ed

just because the front bumper (fender for those accross the pond) is flared in does not make it a Shapecraft!!
Look at the pics on the Upsetting the purists thread of my first Elan . I faired in the bumper and put in extra lights. It was still an Elan not a Shapecraft!!
This is a Shapecraft in the pic below. They only made fastback roofs for Surbiton Motors. The car below was the sister car to Tony Thompsons and only 2 26R's were equipped with Shapecraft roofs. These both had the side windows fitted.
Malcolm Ricketts races a Shapecraft but this was fitted to a std Elan that was modified to 26R spec.
You make several remarks about self appointed experts, I do not proffess to know everything there is to know about 26R's or Shapecraft Elans but I do know personally many owners of such cars the one below being currently in my care.
When will you just learn to enjoy your car for what it is a racing Elan with a considerable history file going back many years.
