26r identities and other info

PostPost by: gordont » Wed Jul 29, 2009 12:06 am

Thanks Roy, I was going to add to my S2 as it already has the 26R guards / steering wheel etc but some photos show the scoop on the LHS and some on the RHS, got me wondering which was right or was it something to do with RHD or LHD cars?

Any comments appreciated.

I seem to remember that a cooler wasn't considered necessary for the typical UK ten lappers which is why just plain scoops were used. Some under the diff, others just above the sill behind the door. Some (all?) were considered to be outside of the regulations. A different scenario for a rally car, of course. The one on the car that I dabbled with was removed for circuit racing. It had one (or was it two?) SU pump(s) to circulate the oil. The (very narrow) cooler was mounted on the laticework vertically behind a slot in the front of the wheel arch. The left side probably because the oil level plug is that side and was used, I presume, for the oil return.
Sorry it's all a bit vague but it was a long time ago!

Hi Gary

Just been browsing this old posting re 26R id's
The engine number for 26-S2-18 is correct at 8465035 according to the copies of the works build sheets in my possession.

The 84 was BRM's code for the Lotus Twincam engine 65 the year built and 035 the engine no.

If you look back through this thread you will see photos showing scoops on left and right sides (not at the same time, as far as I can tell).

I have often wondered about all the diff cooler arrangements that seem to have been used / tried.

I have race my Elan for 30 years without any special diff cooling arrangements with absolutely no problems.

I have had the diff apart only once in the cars entire life and that was to fit a LSD about 20 years ago.

Maybe modern synthetic gear oils that I have used for the last 20 years help and my longest races are around 30 minutes but with around 180 hp and Australian 40C plus weather if you truely needed a diff cooler for an Elan I think I would have found out by now. Cooling ducts for the front brakes I can understand but not the diff

cheers

Hi Rohan
I ran car in modsports with 180+bhp through 9 inch slicks and never had a diff problem either. That was in the 70's

I've just had a new CWP REM treated in the States. It's supposed to reduce friction and heat considerably?

Christian
Looks like the 2nd Elan needs a rear anti roll bar!!

Dave,
Nice try but...Your answer doesn't help that much...
What about the cars(think about yellow/green and white/black), their drivers, date and location !?!

Cab26d,
No goldbug#77 on the picture ...(not yet, in fact )
Dave,
I think you've got the first point: #6 is the car from the Chequered Flag.
So, who will score next and let us learn on that event !?!
(I don't have all the answers, so please, be affirmative & documented! This picture is from a french period magazine, Sport Auto, Special Le Mans edition. Jabby Crombac was redactor for this mag.)

Maybe Jackie Oliver as his 1st 26R left the factory unpainted and he raced in several races against Graham Warner?

Just a stab in the dark

Christian ,

Not sure I follow you on the not yet part , Warner and Walker's car's raced against each other - I have a picture of the order reversed from Mallory in 64 showing Jackie Stewart in the Warner car ( Chequered Flag ) leading Peter Arundel in a Walker gold bug - the Walker cars had the malformed braqke duct as shown in your picture -

I"m sticking with Warner/Walker match up with the divers options being Arundell/Spence and Stewart/??

Ok Cab26b,
You may have that point. I though that the "goldbug" appelation was only on the gold metallic cars ...Because that I am sure, is that the #77 26R is on solid color. IWR team or not.
You said "I have a picture..."; Let's show us that one ...
I just want to be convinced and learn on that period.
