Creating GTS style car from a S2 - the restoration begins

PostPost by: dunclentdr1 » Sat Dec 22, 2018 4:49 pm

Thanks for all the positive comments.

Glen - I will send some pictures of how this hard top is fastened and also on another I have - yes, it is a Bourne S1 - I originally planned to use the S2 in the earlier thread photos but switched to the S1 - couldn't change the thread title as I got locked out of my account and had to re-register on the forum!

Certified Lotus wrote:David, I?m in the midst of restoring an original hard top for my S1. Do you have pictures of the fittings you used to hold the front of the hard top to the windscreen frame? My hard top has two of the three original threaded bolts but they are so delicate I fear they will come off at any time. I?d also like to see the trim area of the window openings as mine is a combination of aluminum trim and rubber molding to seal the window.

By the way, if your car is 0339 it must be an S1, not an S2 and also Bourne body ? I?m confused as the headline on this post says S2 (unless 0339 is one of your other Elans?)

Your car turned out spectacular ! I?m sure your very proud of the finished result.

Glen , I presume you are talking about the 3 T- threaded bolts that are glassed into the forward edge of the roof.
These are available from elantrikbits, special order. I bought them recently and they are very good , but slightly pricey. Because of a bit of communications error I only needed the brackets that the thumb screws hold down and have the T bolts and thumb screws spare. The brackets are about the easiest bit to fabricate and I'm kicking myself for not making them. They are imperial thread sizes.
TTR obviously continue to have roofs made and I'm sure you could presuade thenm to sell you the T bolts they suppliy in their roofs, however, they are metric!

Very pleased with how it has come together (wheels and chassis are not the final items!).

Looks like its in good hands there. I photographed the Semi-Lightweight E Type 3 BXV in the background for Fiskens a few years ago.

All good threads come to an end...thanks for all of the comments and input , helping return a early S1 to the road (and hill climbs and track).

Finally, today, doing justice to the car, at Prescott Speed Hill Climb.

Haha - yes, bought that race suit well before the car, looks like a matching set now.

Thanks - great to be able to drive too and from the events, definitely not a trailer car!

This is what the build was all about - hill climb at the oldest (and very beautiful) motorsport venue in the world - Shelsley Walsh.

Time for a stiffer front roll bar I think judging by the picture. :D But great to see it on the track and it being thrown into a corner

cheers

Road versus track is always a compromise you need to work on. I found softer springs and stiffer front roll bar enabled a good compromise when I had a dual use car

Not enough inside lift! More bar!
