Racing brake pads

PostPost by: Andy8421 » Sun Feb 20, 2022 1:07 pm

I am trying to get my Elan ready for a track day at Goodwood at the end of March. It has been over 20 years since it was raced, and 10 since it turned a wheel in anger.

I am working my way through the braking system. The calipers were all cooked, and the rubbers have burnt / perished / failed. I have rebuilt the rears and now working on the fronts.

I want to replace the brake pads, but have lost my notes of the pads I had been running. I worked my way through a number of suppliers, and seem to recall ending up with 'Carbotech Metallic'. Is this still the brake pad of choice for circuit racing for the Elan?

The car was built to HSCC roadsports spec, so is really a track car. It is only just road legal enough to meet the roadsports requirement. No need for the brakes to work for road use, just on the track.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Hi
I use Carbonne Lorraine RC6 pads in my GTS Elan which I really like compared to previous Mintex and Ferodo pads I used in the past.

+1 CL RC6 only pad I have found that will give me more than 2 laps of Castle Coombe without fading. Not cheap but arriving over the top of Avon rise and finding no brakes could costs a touch more than a box of pads.

I use Hawk 9012 Blue on the front. Very abrasive when cold so you cant use them on the roads a lot, but kind on disks when hot and great feel and modulation.

On the back I use Mintex F6R these have a lower coeffiicent of friction than the Hawks and balance the brakes up nicely with the high weight transfer to the front with modern sticky tyres.

Thanks all.

In these days of supply chain problems, I think my final choice is likely to be driven both by the advice above and by who has what in stock.

I will report back how I get on.

Andy.

Just as an update, I found these in a box marked 'Elan race bits' at the back of the garage:

Given I already had these, I have followed Rohan's advice and I purchased these:

I will report back on how they go.
