Where to get a 60s Style Lotus Racing Steering Wheel

PostPost by: JonnyPlus2 » Sat Jan 07, 2012 3:09 am

Hi All,

I'm starting to restore my Elan, so naturally the first thing I need to get is a nice 13" red leather covered steering wheel, just like on Jimmy's 33.

I know I can get the center badge from Miles Wilkins (I think it's an Elite part) but I don't about the steering wheel itself. I'm thinking that someone here must know where to get 'em. Thanks.

Since you don't give a location, I'm not sure if this is useful, but there's a nice wheel at http://www.rdent.com/. Look under Elan parts

Well, I've found two sources:
1) Westfield stock 50s style wheels for their Lotus 11 replica
2) http://www.alphasteeringwheels.co.uk/ <== this outfit is run by a chap called Dave Stanley and he makes all sorts of vintage steering wheels including Lotus racing wheels in 11,12,13 and 14" sizes (pic is one of his)

the proportion of the last wheel pictured, is out of proportion.............grip is too big.

I don't know if you looked at TTR, as suggested. He has what you are looking for.

Here is steering wheel I bought from Tony Thompson (TTR) some 15 years ago.

23 steering wheel.JPG and

The wheel is on a Lotus 23, so it is a very small diameter wheel. A wheel for a 26R would have a larger diameter.

Hi,

Now that wheel is tastee ! Thanks for this.

I'm reluctant to buy a wheel from Tony T. sight unseen, as he has no pictures on his site and the "26R" wheel is quite unlike your 23 wheel. I think that I'll have to wait until I come over to England so that I can see it in person before I lay out the heavy spondulicks.
