I'm guessing that yours is in Gulf livery; if so, that is the only Elan I did not get an action shot of; I had to leave before your race. I have a shot of you talking to Norman Lupton next to the car. I'll post it, and other Elan shots later.
Cheers,
Pete.

Hi Gordon,
The one's you see the most don't fit the standard elan boot floor. If you look at enough of the FIA cars you will see that ( maybe even the red on) they run non-oem boot floors - my S2 GTS had a "flat" boot floor - i ran a straight through pipe, then a NASCAR boom tube - TTR will sell you the fiberglass panel to accommodate their silencer.

Did the 26/R have a standard" i.e.flat (for S1/S2) boot floor? I have only owned an S4 and a Sprint, they both have a considerable recess to accommodate the silencer box. imho the TT box would fit into this recess.
Cheers,
Pete.

Pete,
The type 26 body shells normally have a recess in the LHS of the boot floor - The recess is stepped , first step is square, second is round(ish). inside the trunk the step(s) serve to locate the spare tire/wheel, square recess is for the muffler.
The standard silencer on an early car is a "180" muffler with in/out on same side of the can ( later they used a straight through with an s -bend inlet pipe. In both set ups the exhaust pipe groove in the rear valence is quite small on a stock body. You would not be able to get a large can muffler in there with out modifications - some pictures to illustrate -
The issue for some is how do you squeeze a large bore exhaust and muffler into the stock recess ? the diameter of the pipes make a transverse/straight through problematic and the available 180 can's are not quite right in the size department . so I think people opt for the easy way out and modify the tunnel for the ttr style muffler or get a suitcase muffler custom made for the recess.

I once did the modification to the floor, using a 200 mm waxed cardboard tube, usually used for making concrete pillars , as a mould. Very easy job to carry out, if you are not afraid of polyester.....The whole modification is done in less than an hour.... It actually takes longer to get the shit off your hands afterwords....

So (apologies for my ignorance) do "modern" 26/Rs not have to comply with period homologation (at least for exhaust systems)?
Cheers,
Pete.
