PostPost by: s4elan » Thu Jun 12, 2008 7:01 pm

Can someone tell me the weight difference between the standard cast bellhousing and the aluminum one? Are there any negatives with using the aluminum?

thx,

Pete

Pete,
From the TTR web site the alloy bell housing saves 4.6kg. Negatives? yes the threads strip easier!!!
Cheers

And the magnesium bellhousing saves 5.85 kg.

Might as well go whole hog and replace the gearbox case with aluminum (8.2 kg), the differential case with aluminum/magnesium (5.75 kg), and the engine block with aluminum (about 18+ kg).

Then magnesium rear uprights, aluminum flywheel, aluminum front hubs, lightweight calipers, aluminum radiator, aluminum/magnesium wheels, lexan windows, TT lightweight body shell - the possibilities extend onward!

wellllll its the best $450 I spent on the car - ---I just go and lift the whole tranny bell and marvel at the lack of weight of magnesium ----and its so pretty -and the helicoils prevent thread stripping -- the old bell allowed newspapers- -rocks -small dogs and old people to be sucked into the clutch area causing throw out bearing failure -- :x -ed

Ed
Well maybe this time you'll fit the closing plate at the bottom or the same foreign objects will continue to be hoovered up....
