...and not forgetting "harmonics",happened to me once between the oil pressure sender and the voltage regulator...oil pressure all over the place ( or so it seemed ) two bi-metallic strips flicking away,one sending the voltage,the other " giving" the resistance....

Old voltage regulator cans ( working or not ) can be picked up for pence and sent off for upgrading.
