Insurance in the UK

For the last six years I have insured my +2 with Footman James. I have had no problems but the premium last april was near ?200. This seems to me a bit expensive and no doubt it will increase this year. The policy is ok but it is unlimited mileage which is really not needed and it includes breakdown and recovery uk and continent. I think this is also a bit over the top as I am a member of the RAC and on my infrequent trips abroad I prefer to arrange my own insurance.
I am 50 ( how did that happen?), and garage the car in rural Lincolnshire.
What experience do you guys have with insurance?

It's better value if you have more than one Lotus! ?250 for Elan & +2 with Footman James.

The Lotus Drivers' Club magazine advertises Heritage, who probably give a preferential rate to members. I abandoned them in favour of FJ some years back - I forget why.

I would totally recommend Lancaster. I'm 25, have had my +2 since I was 23 and do around 13000 miles a year in it (and it still looks great). First car, and thus first policy, and it's 500 quid a year fully comp, - 300 less than FJ quoted, and a whopping 1800 less than all the 'normal' companies... (Aa, Direct Line etc..)

Trouble with insurance is that you never know how good (or bad!) it is until you need to claim.

I phoned quite a few but Firebond was easily the best and only required photos for agreed value - Not the usual shenanigans.

Ditto ?165 with FJ, +2, similar age.... I was with Sureterm, slightly cheaper & 5,000 miles limit, but I needed the unlimited mileage with FJ.
Vehicle is kept on the street (no garage)..

About ?110, agreed value, limited mileage (3K) through Stevenage Car Insurance (the specialise in classic American cars). The policy is with Norwich Union.

Hi, I do my +2s/130 fully comp, with agreed value thru AON Private Clients. Website www.aon-classiccar.com - tel 01384 552788. Its with Royal & Sun Alliance. Greater London and its only ?102. No mileage restriction, and not garaged either (but off road in drive).

I use Carole Nash from biker days.

Bit pricey. ?210 but on an agreed value of 16k. I found the agreed value bit a tad painful when trying to establish a worth in yeras gone by. It seemed to get talked down. I wanted an aboslute signed up agreed value. Nash dont seem as painful as some of the others. I did all the photos and lots of description and reasons for requested value. Same applies to Triumph Bonnies etc.

There were no down turn for anythings "not" Lotus that I found with FJ. I believe they are used to the Harley mob with bikes with thousand of pounds of extras that they want covered. I think you do pay for what you get. Agreed value is important to me.

Insurance companies are a total pain.

AON was one of the companies I phoned having been told by a friend that they offer classic policies with no mileage restrictions.

The result ........ I was told they NEVER offer unlimited mileage on classic policies and they were quoting me much more than John C's ?102 for a mileage limited policy on my S4 garaged at a rural Norfolk postcode.

Sometimes I think they pluck a figure out of the air and it depends who you get on the end of the phone
