You know when something is staring you in the face .........

........Well I've followed the conversations about the BDG Elan as seen at Donington this year and also spectacularly thrashing aroung the track on Youtube and I've just realised that EMA 359K is or was "Custard" formerly Gordon Lund's beautiful Sprint.

How long has it taken me to realise? Not sure what it says about my powers of observation? But I'm glad EMA lives again. Having seen the car in the book and at Donington '04 I was always sorry to hear Gordon had given up on her.

Just thought I'd say that

John

Gordon didn't give up on her, but his insurance company did after a German artic crushed the poor car on a motorway. Luckily Gordon was not injured. The car was declared a write-off and it's great to see that its been made write-on!

I appreciate that Tim and I certainly implied no criticism of Gordon but I did read somewhere that he said he could not face rebuilding the car and in that sense gave up on her (I quite understood his decision by the way and would probably decide the same thing if my own car was mangled) I was just saying that having thought the lovely car was a Sprint lost it's good to see it saved from the dead so to speak.

My real point of the posting was the fact that it was staring me in the face and I hadn't noticed

John,
Gordon wrote an article in Club Lotus magazine regarding Custard's resurrection, Issue 4 October 2010 I can pdf it for you if needed?

I'd love to have a go at driving it on track, but Tony would probably want to hold the V5's (pink slips) for both my cars and my Mastercard until I brought it back in one piece

Regards
Kindest regards

That would be interesting if you have time Alan  I really should join Club Lotus

So basically the conclusion is that I'm pretty much the only person in the Lotus world who didn't now Custard lives again :D

John,
No probs, follow this link for Gordon Lund's feature on EMA (Custard) http://s991.photobucket.com/albums/af33/spyderfan/?action=view&current=153828.jpg

The magazine alone is worth the cost of membership for Club Lotus.

Thanks Alan, very kind.

My problem with both CL and LDC is they are very modern Lotus orientated and my interest is solely with Lotus up to the last days of the Elan.

I'm sure modern Loti are excellent to drive but I struggle to see any connection between an Exige and a classic Lotus. I am Much more in tune with the HLR but unfortunately later Elans (arguably the most important historic road car) aren't welcome.

I am aware that Tim et al are planning an Elan section within CL and that may well be a good compromise, assuming it isn't lost in the larger organisation.

Certainly not, John. We have a strength of spirit in the CLES that reflects the independent nature and esprit de corps of the typical Elan owner! (Strangulated enough?) The only world wide club/section dedicated to the Elan.

We are up and just about running, or at least walking rapidly. Some 5-10 people join each week, it's free to CL members and I look forward to receiving your details! See: http://www.clublotus.co.uk/elansection/lotuselans.aspx

John,
Club Lotus is definitely worth another look to re-evaluate your perception of it. Just flicking through the last 3 issues of the magazine I am struck by the amount of content for classic Lotus cars, it's at least 60 - 40 in our favour.

I attend a few of the big organised meetings during the year, Castle Combe trackday and of course Donington for the annual show with maybe one or two other events. The track day is enormous fun and has old and new attending including a very good showing from HLR, and you don't even have to pay if you don't want to hurl your pride and joy around the track, as it's free to spectatators and anyone driving there in a Lotus of any type will be welcome (even Cortinas  ), it's fascinating to see that the Elise's and maybe a few Exige's are pretty equal to well driven and well set up Elan's and everyone is friendly and genuinely interested in the older cars, even modified one's like mine. The carpark at Donington looked like a 1960's/1970's used car lot for specialist sports cars and the at least 60% of the stalls and displays inside were classic orientated.

Tim, Alex and a few noteworthy others are working hard to get the dedicated Elan section of the club underway, (sorry if I forget to mention people by name I'm going by memory here).

You get a lot for the ?30 a year, including the aforementioned magazine, a proper insurance company recognized valuation service for your car, help with the DVLA who also recognise Club Lotus as the authority on issues such as build date,( if Tim & CL say your car was built pre 1973, thats it no argument about getting road tax free status irrespective of when the car was first registered), there are also the normal club fringe benefits such as 10% off Demon Tweeks and a range of other suppliers and services.

THATS IT ADVERT OVER>>>>>> CAN I HAVE MY COMMISSION NOW MR MORGAN?>>>>>>>
Kindest regards

I've added my car to the registry Tim....well it's a start :)

EDIT. Thanks for the info' Alan. I suppose I'm not really a club kinda guy but having said that I think Lotuselan.net is the best car club I have ever joined and while I wish Tim'n'Co every success with CLES I think this forum is going to take some beating.
