Christmas Sprouts, fact or myth

PostPost by: GrUmPyBoDgEr » Tue Dec 19, 2006 11:00 am

Well here's a different topic, have some fun with it.
boiled in salted water for 20 mins. is the way I cook sprouts.
Some Germans add "Speck" (tiny cubes of smoked streaky bacon) to the water to enhance the taste. My "Ex" also a German often used to roll the cooked Sprouts in bread crumbs & lightly brown them in the ftyimg pan, scrumptious!
"Ah",
but some people will say,
"Your Christmas sprouts should be cooking already, in fact you are already too late".
Some seem to start them towards the end of September for the best results.
Does this improve the taste, flatulence factor or what?
Happy Christmas!

I'm reminded of the old schoolboy joke:

What's green, does 90 mph and is driven by an old fart?

Now I'm curious. How do you say "sprouts" in American? Would these be what we call "Brussels sprouts?" Boiling in salted water for 20 mins sounds about right, maybe a bit less as I like them "al dente." And I like the idea of flavoring with smoked meat.

Yes "Brussels Sprouts" those are the ones.
But what's with this slow simmering for weeks on end, where are the guys with the experience on cooking or very old English jokes 8)
I reckon the air would be coloured not just stink after eating a healthy portion of those

For maximum pressure I find that you need shallots as well as sprouts.

As I result I am usually sent out to go shooting pheasants after Christmas dinner, may be no shotgun required

I put my sprouts on to boil on the 1st of September every year; six weeks after I make the Christmas cake.
My mother used to boil up her own Christmas puddings, starting at the end of July, this usually removed all wallpaper and plaster from the kitchen due to the steam. One year it was so bad that we found some dude had opened a massage parlour in one corner of the room.

I'll get me coat. :D

And why is it that men can do them louder than women?

Because women can't keep their mouths closed long enough to build up enough pressure.....

Merry Xmas!

Ralph.

Oh dammit,

it's the middle of November & I've forgotten to start my Christmas Sprouts yet again.
I am beyond help.
Would a pressure Cooker or slow Microwaving help save the Day?
Must now return to writing the Xmas Cards or I'll never get finished.
Oh the Stress!!

Umm - Steve's post was from 2006!

My son-in-law is Scottish. Last year, it was discovered on Christmas morning that no one had bought the sprouts. With the whole Scottish side of the family due for dinner, disaster loomed. My wife and I were dispatched to scour the suburbs of Washington D.C., and fortunately we were able to source two fine stalks of sprouts.

Mmmm....I thought we were in a time warp continuum or some such. Must clean my glasses.

All this talk of farts; it strikes me that sprouts have the ability to 'add lightness'!

Oh how Heathen can you get!
Forget to buy Sprouts & then cook them for such a short time.
What a nightmare Christmas & topped off with Scottish Guests as well
