Fitting front pads - anti rattle springs

PostPost by: NYK » Tue Jun 08, 2021 9:19 am

About to order pads for my Plus 2 (full restoration, car bought in boxes so no experience of front brakes). Manual shows the shims as having anti rattle feature clearly no longer available. SJSportscars have no anti rattle springs as part of their shim kit. Paul Matty have these, shown in pic. What do people generally do, fit anti rattle springs or not bother?

Not seen those curved wire things before. Are they something specific to +2 brakes? The shims at the top I use but they look different to the ones I have on my S4

Paul Matty only show them being used on the Plus 2, although they seem to share the same calliper, seems a bit odd to me.

Different size caliper Type 14 on Elan Type 16 on +2. Type 14 pad anti squeal kit found listed under Triumph Spitfire brakes. eg.

Hard to understand how those wire things would fit in around pistons and pad

There are two types I seem to remember. They fit between the shim and the calipher body

There is a photo that shows them fitted at:

The pins go though spring, and add resistance (push out) to the inside of pads.

No springs on my early Plus 2, no rattles or squeals either. No harm in fitting them I guess, just a bit of extra weight!
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine!
