steering wheel compatability

PostPost by: David tye » Tue Feb 17, 2015 4:22 am

Hi, I've just ordered a Momo steering wheel from Demon Tweeks without getting an adaptor "boss".
When I ask for the appropriate boss I'm advised by them that the Momo don't make one for the Elan.
This has to be wrong.
Can anyone tell me the vehicle that the steering column is compatible or common with so I can give them an alternative make?
thanks in anticipaation,
David Tye

Hello David,

It would be the same for a Triumph Spitfire.
There is no cure for Lotus, only treatment.

Hi,
Tweeks are not wrong, there are two sizes of spline used on the Elan you may find a boss for the later ( larger ) but for the early boss you will have to get a pattern part.
Early Spline 5/8? X 34 spline. Late 3 /4" X 48 spline.

Thanks guys. I'll go back to them with that information and see what happens.
Any further information still appreciated.

Hi David

Momo used to make a boss for the Triumph Spitfire steering column but it was discontinued many years ago. The part number was 211511.7800.
More recently (although I'm talking 8 years ago) I was able to obtain a Mountney boss which was compatable with the Triumph column and Momo steering wheel. The number for that was MTNKK1029X 241006.
If this doesn't help, you might want to try one of the race guys such as Pat Thomas or Tony Thompson

My S1 Elan has a 5/8" diameter 36 spline shaft. As others mention, a Spitfire boss works. Pegasus racing sells 3 bolt to 6 bolt adaptors, which may give you additional options.

For my car, I purchased a quick release adaptor from Schroeder Racing (in the U.S.) with 6 bolt mounting. With minor modifications, it works well.

David,
If you are anywhere near Cambridge (the UK one), I have a Mountney one you can try? I used it on my Sprint when the original wheel was off being recovered. It's a Triumph Spitfire one
