Hard line brake pipe lengths for the S1, S2 and Coupe

With the large Single reservoir master cylinder.

In the1966 S1, S2 and Coupe parts manual the listed lengths are as follows

Right front - 10 inches
Left Front - 37 inches
Right Rear - 14 1/2 inches
Left Rear - 30 1/2 inches

Front Five way to rear 3 way - 76 inches

RHD master cylinder to five way - 17 inches

LHD master cylinder to Five way - 56 inches

They were not specified in mm so that conversion is up to you :D

So far so good, it ought to be over in about 27 hours and then I'll know whats going on. I think Beau has swimming lessons in the pond out back about noon tomorrow. Going to be tough tossing the ball into 50mph winds though, should be good for a laugh :)

Does anyone know if it is practical to change the front to back brake pipe (that runs inside the tunnel of the chassis), with the body still on?

If so what's the best route for such a pipe.

It does not run inside the tunnel, it runs under and along the bottom of the car.

Hi Bill

If it ain't broke, it will be soon! :) That said if you can get the Elan on a 2 post lift it can probably be done.
I don't think many of you have really looked at the Sows Ear chassis topic.

The first parts installed per the manual on a chassis replacement are 1)

The rear end of the front to rear brake pipe is inserted into the hole (with the grommet on the pipe) and fed in, that leaves nearly 60 inches that is not has to be worked into position, You will need a lot of room (under the Elan) for the brake line to remove the line in one piece without bending it up into something that you can not use as a pattern to make all of the bends at the correct angles. Then get the new line reinstalled without bending the shit out of it. Anyway what do I know go for it, it may be "easy" but I doubt it. :)

I have followed your Sows Ear topic all along.

I did a chassis change myself way back in 1978.

My pipes look a bit pitted, alas including the long one. I was intending to do the ones to the wheels anyway, but it looks like I might also need to do the long one.

I thought it was inside the tunnel, I seem to remember a picture on this forum showing its route in the tunnel, but that might have been the fuel pipe. Anyway, even if mine is in the tunnel, the fact that some Elans have it outside, might mean that it can be done with the body on.

I don't have a 4 post lift unfortunately, the highest I could easily get it would be by using 4 ramps about 9 inch high, I've got two already & they are not too expensive.

One more that a two dimension photo does not really tell you much about how much room you really need to install. My guess is 3 to 4 feet (or a good long meter) off the ground to stick it in the hole and wiggle it into position.

Gary, I've been following along and I'm amazed at the speed you are keeping on these projects. I have a question maybe you can help with. I've just finished installing lines to the wheels on my 66 S2. But I'm looking for a pic that illustrates how the brake bundy line runs from the 4 way (5 if you include the brake light pressure switch ) to the master cylinder. As a reminder, my car had been wrecked, everything in the front was a mess and it's an SE that had the factory Power Brakes so its original lines went to the booster and then to the master cyl. I'm not going to use the booster so I'm looking for a pic that illustrates the lines going directly from the 4 way to the booster. Any such pic around?
