What Tyres

PostPost by: DaveAlmey » Thu Dec 10, 2009 3:11 pm

With my S4 SE chassis just about finished time for me to consider getting some new tyres fitted to the origional 4 1/2 J steel wheels I managed to find.

Having never driven an Elan (or even sat in one for that matter) I would welcome opinion as to what tyres (normal road use) I ought to have fitted. I'm a bit of a keep it how it was man and would hope to source something similar to origional.

Thanks in advance for the reply (s)

Speak to Longstaff tyres and explain to them what you are looking for. I guess you want to keep to 145 section. They will probably recommend some Avons. Downside is they will be costly.

If you search this forum, you'll find lots of opinions and suggestions, to suit every budget and purpose.

S4's had 155/80x13. The flared guards allow them to fit.

I have Michelin 155's and love them. They have good grip, don't squeal and look right on the car. I have tried Avon (too much sidewall flex, rubbed on rear springs) and Bridgestone (no grip, squealed like a pig).

As it can take 10 years to wear a set out you need to make the right choice.

Hi Richard

I can't find any tires on Yokohamas web page in a size that suit our cars.
Could you please tell us witch model and size Pat sells?

On Pat Thomas's recommendation I have fitted Yokohama "A Drive" 165/70/R13s on a 1966 S3 SE DHC and they are fantastic. I even surprised myself with the sharpness of the turn in compared to the Bridgestones that I had previously - and they were good also, but no longer made.

Best tyres I have found in 30 odd years.
