Double "o" ring dipstick

PostPost by: webbslinger » Fri Feb 28, 2020 2:23 pm

I made a new dipstick using a tube and stick from a 5.3L GMC V8. I used this stick because the tube is the same 3/8" diameter as the Lotus tube. Also there is a slight bend in the gm tube about 4.75" down from the top. Cutting the tube there will allow you some clearance from the alternator by rotating it.
I beveled the cut so the tube fits snug into the flare of the existing tube. A short piece of 3/8" hose and 2 clamps holds it together. The hose has to be warmed up to go over the flare, but once on it is absolutely leak free. There is no oily film or drip anymore, like on a normal vehicle, and the stick is easier to use.
How about the yellow handle?

That is a fantastic idea! Do you have the part numbers?

GM# 12622055 and #12609269. The steel used in the stick is tough. Practice making your marks on the piece you cut off.

Thanks for this! I've been looking for a more modern solution. Not so sold on the yellow though

Why not use the whole GM tube to replace the Lotus one?
We are supposed to be having fun, are we not?

The whole GM tube would be too long and the wrong shape, and it may not attach to the engine the same way. This way you can easily remove it and use the original stick again.

I fitted a dipstick with an oil seal and tube from a BMW M20 engine to my twincam many years ago.

It's been pensioned off ever since I fitted the dry sump. :)
