Elan Engine & Cylinder Head ID

PostPost by: hbferrariguy123 » Wed Apr 24, 2019 3:24 am

I have a Elan engine that I would like to identify. The numbers on the engine block are:
120E6015
T1
3H28
116E76485
The number on the cylinder head is 26-E-004
Can someone identify the details of my engine with these numbers?
Thanks,
Lou

Hello,

if engine is easily accessible, providing the engine block identification number may open to more specifics...

for location where they are stamped (not cast) on the block, see for exemple :

A photo of the numbers and their location would help. Some are obvious like the 120E5015 and T1 but the location and style of the other numbers on the block and head would help. There should be other numbers on the head also on the bottom and back face

cheers

3H28 is a casting date of 28th August 1963.
116E76485 is possibly the engine number. It indicates that the block was originally installed a standard Mk1 1500 Ford Cortina and not a Lotus Elan or Lotus Cortina.

Here's a clearer photo of what must be the engine number. It reads 116E76485.

The head is an early die cast head that was fitted to engine number LP 962 thats stamped on the rear face. The date stamped on the bottom face will be the date the head was assembled 7 Oct 63. The 26 E 611 is of the Lotus part number format but the cylinder head part number for the finished bare head was 26 E 0703 so maybe this was the part number for the raw casting.

The 26 E 004 is the casting number on the timing chain cover assembly back plate. The part number is A026 E 0004 for the timing case assembly of the front cover and back plate.

Others may be able to supply information on whether this engine was originally fitted to an Elan.

The block looks like it came from or was used in a Mk1 Cortina at some time as stated and was probably used for an engine rebuild at some time in the past

cheers

Block was definitely originally fitted to a standard 1500 pushrod Mk1 Cortina.
What is the bore size? Interesting pistons. Looks like straight flat top with no dome at all.

The bore measures 3.250 and yes the pistons are flat, no dome.
How about the crankshaft? Does the stamping on it: PC 487, EN 24 mean anything to anyone?
I was told the engine was built by Dave Bean in the '90's. I'll call them in a few days and ask if they can also help ID what I have.
Thanks...

You have a nice steel 8 counterweight racing crank there
EN24 is the steel the crank is made from I dont recognise PC 487 but potentially its a part number from whoever made the crank

JP are an Australian piston maker who does sell into the USA so the JP 484 may be one of their pistons. I could not find the JP484 in their current catalogue but the JP 485 and 486 are pistons for kent block engines in the catalogue

Lou, as Rohan correctly points out, the Lotus Engine Number on the cylinder head is LP962.

This head was originally fitted to an Elan 1600 that was invoiced in December 1963 and exported to the USA to Ecurie Shirlee.

116E was not a Cortina - 116E referred to the 1500 Consul Classic or Capri. Where confusion might arise is that Cortinas were originally referred to as a Consul Cortina - this is not the same as a Consul Classic / Capri. A Consul Classic looks like a big Anglia! In basic terms a Consul Capri is a Consul Classic but with a different rear window.

Agree with you that some later Mk1 Cortinas had the 120E block though.

116E engines / parts came in early Mk1 Cortinas but a block stamped /engraved with 116E above the engine mounting (important to note "stamping" as there were blocks with 116E 6015 cast into the block just in front of the bellhousing mounting area as per most Ford blocks of that era, as well as 120E 6015) would have come from a Consul Classic or Capri as that is its identifying number.

Interesting engine you've got there.

I'm intrigued to know the details on the crank as I had one of those cranks until recently. It came in a very bespoke engine and haven't seen another elsewhere.

Here's some interesting info I gathered about the crank, connecting rods, main caps and cams. Looks like I'm off to a good start!
Next I'll measure the valves to see what's up with the head.
Fun!

"The crank is made EN24 steel billet, the best! The main caps are steel, the AN/1018 is the part#. The 125E rods are the stronger Lotus factory rods and I see that they are fitted with the high strength rod bolts. The cams are Kenny Harman reginds. KH2 .380" gross lift, 274 degrees duration, possible 10 hp increase over stock. Engine may produce 130hp, Could use a hotter cam to match the steel bottom end."
