Re Fitting Engine

PostPost by: mark030358 » Fri Apr 01, 2005 11:08 am

Gents,
Will the twincam engine go back in with the tubular exhaust manifold pre-fitted?
Took it off to get it out but not sure about when putting it back.

thanks

In the past i've found it a struggle to fit the manifold after fitting the engine.
This year i left the two manifold sections on (minus the y piece) and found it a lot easier

Never tried to refit an engine with the manifold (header ?) attached, I find the best way is to lay the manifold in place, fit the engine then fit the manifold to the head, I have on occasion removed the exhaust studs then refitted them once the engine is in.
This was because it was not a qenuine Lotus manifold but an after market unit which was a one piece and not the two piece as per Lotus.

I, too, found it best just to lay the headers in place, then fit the engine. This way both pieces can jiggle their way together

I like to get the motor basically in place, yet not bolted down, still supported by the hoist. This gives enough movement to wiggle the headers in.

I find that I have to fit the engine in with the LH engine mount off, fit the manifold and then fit the LH mount otherwise it's too much of a squeeze to get the manifold onto the head without taking out some of the manifold bolts.

The header on my S2 Elan needs to be removed on the way out of the car, and dropped into place shortly before the engine is fully aligned with the transmission on the way back into the car, otherwise I have to pull it partway back out to install the header - won't fit in any other way! Though I suppose some headers might be different.....
