No Spark

PostPost by: Mrozik » Tue Sep 15, 2020 3:58 pm

I have just completed a rebuild of my 1968 Elan+2. All is well but I can get a spark!

As I replaced many of the components i.e. coil, HT leads, distributor cap, points I guess something was not right.

I tried using the old coil, HT leads and distributor cap but there was no change

Grateful for an suggestions on how to proceed?

Thanks
John

Pull out the multimeter and start at the very beginning - you'll find it!

Lucas Fault Diagnosis Service Manual - Catalog No XIA116
It is a reprint, I suspect I picked it up off ebay. Covers the old coils, distributors, starters, generators, alternators, and wiper motors

There are some excellent Lucas technical references - I believe published in the 50s as a series of distance learning courses for technicians in Lucas' export markets.

Clear, well written and well illustrated - a number are linked to in various threads in this forum.

While I understand the reason, it make a pleasant change from 'Plug the fault code reader into the OBD port. Read off fault code. Replace indicated module.'

Hello John, I recently had the same problem after a long time storage and eventually changed all the same things that you have, from the coil to the plugs. If you haven’t already tried, take the coil ht lead out of the distributor end and see if it sparks. That way you can work back or forward, don’t assume new stuff is ok check with a meter ie ignition coil.Good luck.

Yes - the Lucas manuals are great.
Very thorough, systematic, step by step, easy to follow.
I posted up half a dozen or so a few years ago.

Here's a link to the complete fault finding manual:

I'd have uploaded it as pdf but it's 2.8MB
