S2 Trunk Hinge nut size

PostPost by: Ianashdown » Tue Nov 22, 2022 7:04 am

Can anyone tell me the correct size for the nuts that hold the trunk lid to the hinge on an S2? The part book shows LUCN040F which I think would 1/4 -28 but from memory they didn’t seem that large, I remember #10-28 . .

Thank you,

Ian

Pretty sure my pre-airflow coupe, which still uses the same hinges as a S1-2 is attached w/ 1/4-28 UNF hardware. I can't verify that today since the coupe is 900 miles away.

Not sure on the stud thread but the female holes on my +2 hinges are 1/4unf (tpi). Can't see why they would be different on an elan.

On a +2 the hinges are the same as a S4 Elan. But S1 and S2 hinges are i think different.

Well, I think we’ve established that they are 1/4”! I think I’ll take both UNC & UNF!

My S1 are UNC and appear to have been some kind of a self tapper. All studs have flutes like a tap and are very hard. One was broken and a near impossibility to remove. The others would very obviously have broken if I had kept trying to remove them. Planned to remove for plating and replace with better studs but gave up on that and after great difficulty had to heli-coil the broken one.
