Zetec Elan

PostPost by: dougweall » Tue Sep 16, 2003 3:47 pm

I know the Spyder +2 conversion (chassis, suspension and Zetec engine) makes sense to most people but what about the same being done with an Elan. What?s your view ?
P.S. I?m off to France for 10 days will catch up with you then.

I am more for originality, total originality is not needed. It is the always battered about question. How much can you change before it is not an Elan anymore? My opinion is to allow a spyder chassis as the single large change. Cassette water pump and alternator, plus a few minor parts. If you go with a spyder chassis, spyder suspension, Zetec engine, modern 5 speed, all you really have is an Elan body. Sure the character is the same. If so then why not replace the whole car with a Miata? You get reliable mechanicals, comfort, speed, agility (ok not up to Elan standards, but still pretty good fun), parts availability and you won't cry as much it it gets into a wreck.

<span style='color:blue'>When I visited Spyder earlier this year they had their first Zetec Sprint nearly finished, it looked fantastic- all the bits looked like thy were designed in from the start, however, I understand that others may disagree.
Anthony Colin Bruce was always one to adapt to the latest available equipment, so my view is that he would approve.

Yeah, I'm with type36lotus on this one. My major change ($$$) was to do a stroker motor and at the same time do the cassette pump and alternator. I REALLY like the torque and power and keeping with the Elan spirit. I've got an '01 Miata and although very nice, it does not replace the Elan in my mind. They compliment each other very well.

So Mike, when are we going to get the others over here from the Yahoo groups? You know, move out of the kitchen and into the living room. I like this format better.

Gee I don't know, I check here as often as Yahoo as I too like this setup. I wonder what Yahoo's rules are pertaining to group usage? I don't think I would like to loose all the great information in the Elan groups archive. It would be neat if someone could copy the entire archive, then index it to CD to be made available to each of us at a nominal cost for our own personal archives. I also wonder how long messages are kept? They may also be purged as we use up our quota of disk space.

That is why I have it stored at an additional location. The Yahoo groups is provided as a free service for advertising. Knowing this, I have had the mailing list archived at escribe since the beginning. Can not be to careful.

Can we search the escribe data jeff?
Could it be incorporated into this site?

It would be the move from email to web that would cause most consternation, I suspect, in getting everyone moved over here.

I have been looking at ways to combine the news group and the email list. I have not found a good product yet, that does both, but I am still looking.
