S3 Restoration

PostPost by: Sploder90 » Thu Aug 01, 2019 10:58 am

Looking like you are making really good progress there Glen,
makes my recent recent elan work volume look somewhat lacking
My twink should hopefully be in smaller pieces by the end of this weekend..
Hopefully with no more head scratching previous modification to be discovered

Hi, yeh it is coming along very quickly and pain free.
I am currently finishing off a 10 point restoration on an early P400 Miura so the elan is levelling out the scales in terms of speed and accessibility.
Loving it!!

Last Miura I saw was about 12 months ago

This is it with a few other more mundane vehicles  as viewed from our hotel bedroom window at LeManoir just before it went to Blenheim palace salon prive concours.
Stunning cars..

Warning: non lotus content!

Yes I know that Miura.
I entered a Ferrari 275GTB at Salon that year and won the Chairman Trophy.
I am hoping my Elan will knock the socks off all of them.
I want to go and hustle with it!

Morning,

Referencing an earlier post on this thread; where can I find the green paint used on the gearbox, and on my s3 and +2, the bell housing as well? As they are on my bench at the moment, I may as well paint them the correct colour! The front brake calipers and maybe the struts as well were also painted the same green. I suspect is is a ford colour.

Cheers,

David

What colours are the different sections of the gearbox assembly supposed to be?

This picture shows what I believe was original green paint on the gearbox of my S3 when I overhauled it several years ago.
Other pic shows how I finished it.

The body is getting stripped on Sunday.
Cleaned off all of the yellow paint on the engine and gearbox tonight. Gearbox next to be inspected.
Engine will be back together next weekend with painting starting Monday night.
With regards to engine colour, I have been speaking to some people in the know and the information is quite conflicting. Some say lotus grey, others say ford grey and then there is the ?they painted them in what ever grey the shop down the road had in stock?.
I have spray cards of various shades and the ford grey and lotus grey I have at hand are just too similar to fight over.

It is now on the ramp in my workshop with work beginning tonight, starting with the body off.

How can I post my progress every day on here? This is my first post so I am unsure what is accepted/done in this situation. Do people do this?
I would like to post every step of the way so people can follow and let me know of what I am doing wrong.

Very excited!!

Going to enjoy this Glenn !

I had a little luck at Salon Prive myself a few years ago.

Nice work, it is a good feeling when your work pays off.
That looks like a very nice early S1.
What category were you in that year?

I am finding some nice evidence of green paint on the gearbox after getting rid of the majority of the incorrect yellow, and oddly there are definite traces of original green on the bell housing as well. I have been informed that this should be black and I am sure this is true but this one looks to be an exception. I will be rolling with what I have found as it is too honest to believe otherwise.

Finding details like this make me feel like I really have found a great project.
All of these small details I cherish. They make it seem as though it isn?t just another car and that there haven?t been too many sexy fingers bastardising it.

Scottish Rally

I am in the middle of brainstorming a seven day Lotus Elan rally through Scotland in the autumn of 2020.
It will be an organised event with destinations based on the participants input.
The NC500 is always the obvious route up there, and for very good reason but there are equally as good roads away from the now busy coast roads.

Let me know if there is any interest out there to join in.

Just to confirm, both my s3 and my +2 have green bellhousing and gearboxes, and I am positive it is the original colour. Consequently, not all were black! I would be interested in finding matching green paint.

The color on my original 69 S4 SE gearbox is definitely green, but rather dark as shown in the picture.

I didn't repaint this when I had the gearbox refurbished recently. The mechanic was amazed that the gearbox had never been touched since I picked the car up at Hethel in 1969. A time capsule. Decided to keep the original paint and patina.

Ignore the bell housing color (it's magnesium and non-original).
