Orange Ebay Elan

Just some observations regarding the Orange Elan on Ebay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lotus-Other-Ela ... ars_Trucks

It must be one of those very rare Elans as it's the 18 main bearing model, with the special dual disc clutch and the three oil pump lubricating system. Is it my imagination or is the serial number a little odd for a S3 car. For that matter, how can a S3 car be a 1966? And where did those seats come from. Interesting that it's stated the car has been sitting for years but the crank is marked .020 / .020. It looks like it will need another grind. It's also appeared to be the benefactor of an RCR restoration. Oh, that means "Rattle Can Restoration".

Like many of us, I'm always looking for another Elan. And when we see one we usually do a mental math check to see how deep we would be into the restoration and to determine if we can get this project past the auditor ......oh, I mean wife.

This one has a starting bid of nearly $20k US. Hmm, let's add things up, just roughly.

Paint $10k
Engine $6k
Trans $100 to $1500
Suspension $1k
CV axles $1k
Interior $2k to $3k
Things I didn't think of $3k

Hmm, $43k to $45k, ...............I better not tell the wife! Maybe I better keep looking for a better deal.

Oops, forgot brakes, clutch, gauges, new dash...........Maybe I should stop now. $50k ? Maybe my son will get a scholarship to college!

Good thing it was "in a dry, concrete floor garage in Dallas", otherwise there might have been rust issues.
It's actually $19,800, buy it now, or best offer. I'll bet it goes away quietly before the auction runs its course.

First registered in Chelmsford, where some of the factory Elans were also registered at the time. It is in the correct VIN area for S3s and left the factory on 24 August 1966.

Yep, Europa seats.

Where IS the gearbox?
Don't know the seats are Europa, but they are not correct S3 seats. Even S3-SS have low back seats w/ the basket weave centers.

Nothing wrong w/ the typical early S3 VIN, Frank. And that would be appropriate for a '66.

OOPS! I finally see one photo of the 'box. But then, it should have the one piece shift lever.
