Installation help with Engine mounts

Hi all,

Got a replacement set of engine mounts and was supposed to put them in
with a mechanic friend of mine but he cancelled on me. Now I am
looking at perhaps doing the job myself, but looking at it I have a
couple of questions I am hoping someone can answer for me.

First, it is the left hand side mount that is broken, just below the
carbs. I am wondering where to unbolt first. Should I unbold the
mount from the engine first or from the chassis first--or does it
actually matter.

Second, where should I support the engine. The only place I can see
is on the oil pan by puting a board under it and then carfully jacking
under it. Is there a better place?

Any other words of wisdom are appreciated.

David,

Before you begin, take the carbs off the left side of the engine and put them
on the right.

Frank is right you know,but you have the basic idea,support the sump
with a piece of plywood to spread the load and jack,bearing in mind
the bolts are a bugger to get at...............

Even Zetecs have the carbs on the right unless you are talking about the
Duratec in the Focus.

It is the generally agreed upon method to describe the left or right of the
car from the drivers perspective, so while it is the left looking at the it
is generally referred to as the right side or as I was taught to say when
working racetracks, it is drivers right. Don't let our teasing get to you on
this, since I much prefer drivers right and drivers left to the British
'OffSide' and 'Nearside' which I still can't get straight. <grin>


Here's what I did last week to put the mounts on, and what I'll be doing
next week when I get a Weber mount for the carb side since all 4 of the ones
I have were for the Stromberg engine (and exhaust side of Weber engine).
Since the carbs are off and waiting to be rebuilt I won't include that step,
but it does make it a little easier if they are off. If they are on you can
remove everything from underneath on the carb side, where I can't on the
exhaust side due to the tubular headers getting in the way.

I use a large saddle jack or a board between saddle and the engine to gently
support the oil pan.
I remove the safety wire on the two mount to chassis bolts and loosen the
bolts/nuts.
Next I remove the four mount to block bolts.
I then remove the two chassis to mount bolts.
Next I apply loctite to the four mount to block bolts and install the mount
to the block but I do not tighten the bolts yet, so it is easier to align
the mount to chassis bolts.
I then adjust the engine height with the jack and insert the chassis to
mount bolts and thread the nuts on a few threads to keep them from falling
out.
Once the chassis to mount bolts are in I torque the mount to block bolts
down.
Next I remove each chassis to mount nut, loctite the bolt and torque the nut
down.
Since my chassis to mount bolts are drilled for safety wire I then add the
safety wire and finish by removing the jack.
