I have just had the guy from the garage on about my engine.....it
would appear that Ive not got a burnt valve...the head appears
fine....its the block!!!.....cyl No 4 has a rather large groove in the
side of it, hence the loss of pressure......
I therefore have various options....1, bore out and new liners and
pistons.....2, new twink......3, new (different engine..cross flow,
Zetec etc etc etc)
does anyone have experience of this?....ie the best way forward.....I
would like to keep the twink but I'm not sure of how much a full
rebuild will cost me......I have been directed to a company
called 'Crewe Engines' who can do all this work and are the prefered
supplier for Mercedes (who the guy who told me of them, works for)....
what do we reckon???......rebuild or new engine??
thanks

reputation as engine re-manufacturers but as you say their bread and
butter is Mercedes. My DPO went to QED, Kelvedon and Chris Neil for very
detailed quotes when he had my engine rebuilt (two of these companies
are still the best in the UK, draw your own conclusion as to which one
has dropped off the map). He had the job done at QED. Both of these will
cost you a fair bit but it will be right when it comes back.
If your block just needs a re-bore and pistons then there are lots of
Ford specialists who can do that part of the work but I suspect that you
are looking for someone to do the whole thing.
Of course you could approach the Cheshire Lotus Owners Group's two
approved engine suppliers: they may fix you up with a spare unit whilst
you get your own fixed?

My guess is that the valve dropped some metal into the bore, which
caused the scratch.

See you in the M100 on Sunday!

Pete.

Gareth
Best bet (IMHO) is to pick up a ford block bore and deck it to suite, will give you a little more poke.
John

P.S. what was the verdict on your slave cylinder?
