grommet supplier

PostPost by: wgrainge » Thu Jan 27, 2005 2:49 pm

Does anyone know of a good source for rubber grommets (US or Canada
preferably). I've been trying on and off for the past year to
complete my firewall and am having a helluva time. I've tried the
usual sources (Bean, JAE, British Wiring, etc) with some success, but
have a couple of oddball sizes I need (ie 7/8" OD heater hose through
a 1" hole).

Anyone have experience with a supplier who has a really good selection?

BTW - the larger7/8 heater hose is to accommodate an aftermarket
heater valve. I'll post pics and info if the results are good.

Thanks,

Will,
I have been told (but not checked) that Paul Matty (UK) sells sets of grommets. I am going to do a re-wire so I will need a set. I checked out the usual auto-electric suppliers and can easily get the correct diameters but it is the thickness of the fibre-glass, compared to sheet steel, which is the problem. I'll have a look at their catalogue.

Cheers,
Pete
One thought - does TVR have a dealer network in the US? They produce g-f cars so must have the same problem.

I have "made" grommets by splitting a rubber hose lengthwise then
trimming to length for the diameter of the hole. Not perfect, but if
the open end is at the bottom most people don't notice. In the
electronics world they had what they call caterpillar grommet. Same
concept, usually plastic, comes in different thicknesses all of which
you trim to length.

I've used Winzer, Wurth and Aircraft Spruce
each provides a god selection of quality rubber grommet.

The first two are great sources for electrical connectors and hardware.
Both Winzer and Wurth are from the old world where stuff isn't made to
WalMart specifications.

PM does indeed do a grommet set for the Elan. I used this when I rewired
my S4.

Will

McMAster-Carr has a very good selection of grommets. Lots of sizes,
materials, etc. They don't sell one or two, but bags of 50 or 100, but at
least their prices are reasonable.

Go to this web site, type in "grommet" in the find window and you will get
many choices to choose from. I've found them useful for various shims also
(yes, I have bags of excess shims lying around).

Does Paul Matty have a web site or e-mail address?

Yes they do. Here is a link-
http://www.paulmattysportscars.co.uk/

Few actual parts are listed on the web site pages, but they do have a
complete parts listing with prices in a zipped set of Excel files. Here is
the direct link to the WinZip file-
http://www.paulmattysportscars.co.uk/co ... /parts.zip

The grommets are listed on the body trim page.

Thanks everyone for the tips on locating grommets. I actually
purchased 2 complete "sets" from a couple of the usual sources, but
neither matched the holes on my car very well. Perhaps there is a lot
of variation from one car to the next.

Try the industrial suppliers. Most can sell you singles/low
quantities in the exact sizes you want.
