Valve Clearances For Sprint Engine

PostPost by: andrewdmoore » Thu Oct 21, 2004 11:13 am

During some engine work, my mechanic noticed that some 'high lift cams' had been fitted, the spec of which neither me nor the previous owner know anything about. Apparently there is nothing stamped on them either. The mechanic set the valve clearances at 0.125" inlet and 0.1" outlet as per the standard cams but asked me to double check if anyone knew if there was a possibility that the cam fitted may require different clearances. I can only assume it's a 'fast road cam' that's fitted. Sorry to sound so vague but as always, any advice appreciated.

I also noticed that he'd put NGKBP6ES plugs in the car, whilst most of you seem to advocate BP7ES is there a notable difference?

Thanks, Andrew

Andrew, those are the same specs I have on a .413 lift cam. They're pretty 'ticky' most of the time and I think the gap should be a bit closer.

I'm running NGK's BP5ES which I believe are a bit hotter than the BP6ES. How's the car running?

Andrew,
I hope you ment to say 0.010" and 0.0125" (not 0.10" & 0.125") or your engine should be quite noisy!
The standard tappit setting is 0.005/7" and 0.009/11" for your engine.
How did the mechanic determine that they are high lift cams ? its not all that obious just by looking at them.
Cam manufacturers give spec's for their products and can very from standard settings but without a ref. number the only thing you can do is go for standard setting plus a couple of thou to be safe.
