handbrake switch orientation

I was reading the Elan thread regarding different handbrakes. I had replaced mine but assumed it was as original.
My handbrake switch protrudes from the bottom of the handbrake body. I am always knocking wires off with my feet.
Is this the proper orientation for the handbrake switch? It would make more sense if it were mounted atop the hand brake body.

Hi Bob,
Assuming the Plus 2 uses the same handbrake as the Elan, I believe that is correct. Certainly in the Elan there isn't room for the switch above the ratchet tube, the pedal box cross shaft and bodywork get in the way - don't know if it's the same in the plus 2 ? If you have the same switch as mine, the switch stem is probably 20mm or so longer than it needs to be, maybe it's possible to shorten it - that might improve matters. Or try bending the spade terminals at right angles to give a little more clearance.
If all that fails get some smaller shoes

I solved the problem by soldering wires to the switch terminals with "bullet terminal" crimped to the other ends. I removed the push on terminals on the loom wire and crimped on bullets. I screwed switch in, set adjustment, locked with jam nut and connected the bullet terminated wires with single connectors.
Took car for a ride and the wires stayed on.
