Plus2 engine bay bulkhead question

PostPost by: TonyA » Mon Mar 06, 2023 4:14 pm

I wanted to tidy up the wiring across the bulkhead by securing the cables with a Plastic P clip at the mid point. When I drilled a 5mm hole to secure a rawlplug, the drill bit when through the fibreglass but less than 1cm in, encountered what feels like a metal plate.. An ideas what it is, can I drill through it to put in the rawlplug..any other ways of fixing cable P clips to the Elan bulkhead..Advice please..thx..Tony

Probably the heater box, you have 1cm , use a tiny rawlplug and screw...unless your wiring is heavy?

Imho you could try small alloy "Rivnuts" . More solid and correct than Rawplugs.

Hi

A small but aggressive dome headed self tapper with a dab of glue on the end into a small pre drilled hole would work well for your intended application in my opinion.

Zetec+ 2 under const, also 130S. And another 130S for complete restoration. Previously Racing green +2s with green tints. Yellow +2 and a couple of others, all missed. Great to be back 04/11/2021 although its all starting to get a bit out of control.

Alan
Excuse my ignorance but are rivnuts suitable for fibreglass?
I thought they were for metal?

Rubber nut inserts work well in fibreglass https://www.theinsertcompany.com/rubber_nuts.php

Tony, just had the same problem.

This time I used a hex head sheet metal screw, as it will be way easier to unfasten with the engine in place. Main thing is to use the same fasteners in this area and perhaps make a note as it is difficult to even see in there when everything is in place.

Another option is plastic screw rivets - scrivets
