Autosparks harnesses?

PostPost by: Doctor924 » Sun Jun 05, 2022 6:03 am

Hi
Apologies if this is an obvious question, but what’s the difference between autosparks main harnesses and dash harnesses?
https://www.autosparks.co.uk/lotus-elan ... -harness-1
And
https://www.autosparks.co.uk/lotus-elan ... ng-harness

I have a 71 plus 2S (uk car). So assume these looms are suitable?
I’ve just about given up trying to make the loom I got with the car fit as it rarely matches any wiring diagram in the manuals.

Thanks
Ian

One goes in the front and the second joins it to feed everything behind the dash. You will need both if you are replacing everything.

This is the first time I have seen the prices of these things. Not cheap, and with the variants of the Elan wiring during its run, there is no guarantee that it will fit straight out of the box - see the numerous other threads on the subject.

Are you au fait with auto-electrics? If so, try making your own harness...

Thanks - so the main harness is better described as the engine harness which then connects to the dash harness and the rear harness... No.. - not cheap.
The one that came with the project car I have is a very very poor fit with any wiring diagram I have found, making it very hard to follow and adapt. I have no idea which make/variant the one I have is.

So the risk is even if I were to get a new set of harnesses for my 71S, there is no real guarantee they would be any better?

Thanks
Ian

I've fitted three Autosparks harnesses (2 x Elan type 26 & 1 Elite Mk 14); all three fitted well, though on the Elan looms, an additional coil wire was required.

They would be a lot better
As he says though, it might need a small addition/adjustment.

They look quite reasonably priced for full wiring looms. Something made properly that should work is much better than trying to make it yourself. You end up with a lot of wires the same colour with tracers on the ends. No fun when it needs fault finding

Does your 71 +2S have 3 Fuse Boxes which is important to get correct Harness.

Easy way to tell is if it has a fuse cover in the dash it’s a later single fuse box version.
Ash tray in same spot is 3 fuse box under bonnet type. Mine is an early 130 with the fuses under the bonnet.

You should have the Fuse Boxes in Engine Bay nearside or holes where they were fitted. Or as said for
2 S130 fuses where Ashtray used to be in Dashboard.
Big difference on Harness

Autosparks have been in the business of making Looms for lots of classic cars for a very long time now and they know all the options and variations. They know what they are doing.
I have in the past on other classics also found them very approachable if you have queries. Being local to them I usually visit but do give them a call if you need to.
All the different +2 Loom and fusebox variations are shown on their website.
