JPS +2 ?

PostPost by: lottex » Tue Mar 23, 2021 8:06 pm

I read in an earlier thread that JPS +2’s were manufactured from May 73 to Sep 73. I have been offered what appears to be a genuine JPS , chassis no 73041305L ( presumably built April 73), first registered 01/06/73
It has a gold metalflake roof , black paint with black sills, tinted glass, oatmeal interior, its a 130/5 , reg UUD 66L, just in case anyone knows the car? Haven’t had a chance to quiz Andy Graham yet...
Can I assume its the real deal? Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks, Peter

73051398L was the engineering development car for what became the JPS (though Lotus never used that term).

So I would say it is highly unlikely this car is a JPS, or even another development car. Just one that’s been made up to look like one at some time. It is possible that was done at the factory, given the two months between it coming off the production line and going onto the road. Andy may have further data on it.

I have attached the article I wrote on the JPS Plus 2s in Club Lotus News magazine in 2019.

It is also worth mentioning that a number of cars (like mine) had bodies produced with the gold roof/sills but weren't produced/sold as JPS. So it is possible for that a JPS scheme car with correct features and gold roof/sills was converted at later date to JPS scheme by an owner. Most likely signal of these would be the paint code on the id plate not being black.

Whether these none JPS cars were repainted JPS cars or car built using rejected or unneeded bodies for JPS cars isn't really known. I haven't found any signs of black paint on my car, so I think it was a reject or unneeded JPS body that was repurposed for a full body color car early in manufacture.
'73 +2 130/5 RHD, now on the road and very slowly rolling though a "restoration"
